as being discussed in many separate threads at the moment the newest breed of hot hatches seem to have ridiculous power and cost the price of a a mid level saloon so should we still be calling them hot hatches or hyper hatches?

Personally, i would call the Merc A45 AMG and the RS3 a hyper hatch, just because of the sheer power and cost. Does anyone agree? are there any others that should be added to the list? are they just regular hot-hatches now and am i stuck in the past?

Fiesta ST, renaultsport, Golf GTi - hot hatch
A45, RS3 - hyper hatch ?

Why change the nomenclature? It's just the natural progression of things. Ten years before the EP3 was boasting 200hp the 205 GTi was considered 'hot' with just over half that, but we didn't start calling the new cars 'hyper hatches'. That said, I'll admit the A45 AMG seems pretty wild compared to the rest of it's class.

In my own view, I think things step up a gear once you're getting on for 300bhp in a hot hatch.

150bhp - warm hatch

200bhp - hot hatch

300bhp - 'hyper hatch' ??

When hatches have 600+bhp as standard then maybe yes.

If someone with a Golf R or A45 AMG said they have a 'hyper hatch' I'd seriously worry for their mental health.

And what happened to the word 'super' wouldn't that come first anyway...

Sounds like a bks term.

Hot hatches are just faster and more powerful than they were. Still a hot hatch as far as I'm concerned.

When Bugatti, Lamborghini etc start making small hatchback cars that do 230+mph that's when you get a Hyper Hatch

I don't think it will catch on.

There is no such thing as a Hyper car or Hyper hatch, its just marketing bks and motoring journo pedalled non-terms.

Super car used to be the be all and end all for road car performance (take the Iconic F40 as an example). However, as sports cars started to move up in performance (I'd argue the likes of an F430, F360 are not super cars but sports cars - very capable sports cars but they are not super cars) the term 'hyper' was used to differentiate the likes of the Veyron and Zonda and the 'super cars' that were actually sports cars.

There is no such thing as a hyper car, hyper hatch, junior super car, super hatch or any other term. You have regular performance cars (be it a fast saloon, pure sports car, muscle car etc.) and Super Cars, the type of thing only the 1%'ers can afford, like the new P1.

A 300+ hp hatch back is still a hot hatch in my eyes.

and how many hypercars are currently able to do 230+mph ?

1? 2?

How is it comparable to have a hatch need to do the same speed as a car twice the size with usually 3 times the Cubic capacity ?

the RS3 delimited will do 174mph apparently - isn't that kind of hyper? - puts it in a different league to the other hot hatches
