Totally agree. In France, cars over 1800kg are taxed heavily, although it doesn't apply to EVs. But every 100kg over 1800kg attracts another €1000 euros at purchase time. Although I'm not really sure that'll do much to dissuade the sorts of people who buy these things.TX.

The simple fact is that cars have grown over the last few decades, but spaces haven't.
I still remember the first time I drove a then just-released MK4 Mondeo estate from the company pool and parked it in a multistorey. When I got out, I noticed that the front of the car was hanging out of the front of the space by a couple of feet, so I went to reverse it further back. Except that I couldn't. The rear was only a couple of inches from the wall.
Yet I'm on holiday in the US right now, and my Ford Expedition Max hire car is a full 80cm longer than that Mondeo estate, but the voluminous American parking spaces pose no problem at all.
Solution - make all new parking spaces the same size as the ones at Costco.

You presumably chose to hire an Expedition Max. You could have hired a Fiesta or a Golf in the US. Space has been much more readily available in the US than in a Medieval European town or city.
How big should cars become? If we all drove around in HGV tractor units would councils be required to build multi storey car parks to accommodate them?

Indeed, and weight as well, EV's are getting an easy ride to encourage uptake but it should be down to how much space your car takes, and not having the bizarre situation where a £1000 supermini from 2005 pays more than a massive electric SUV that costs 100k plus, ok I know there is the luxury tax aspect but after that its cheaper. It wouldn't solve the problem. However, it may dissuade some from buying a SUV for the 2 mile shopping run.
Going to have to adjust it somehow as ICE cars will dwindle so there wont be hordes of them to subsidise EV's any more.
And doing it on weight may encourage the manufacturers to focus more on providing lighter models, not that I think they add ballast for s
ts and giggles but they could perhaps do a bit more, I do think that EV's could potentially end up lighter than ICE if the much touted battery tech thats promised ever appears, single motor version with a battery thats nearer 200 kilos than 400 ? May be a while but I think it will happen.There's little point in just increasing taxes or whatever, these car owners will just moan - but still pay.
The spaces need to remain the same as at present with just a minimal increase in width for new developments. Nothing else will stop people buying cars too big for everyday use - it's a lack of common sense that's causing the problem.

The USA has different emissions and pedestrian safety regulations for 'Light Trucks', so where cars were heavily legislated against, LTs were not. Hence the rise of the SUV, which like every other ridiculous American nonsense, immediately took over the world as fashionable and here we are in a world where the Fiesta and Focus are discontinued yet ugly, heavy, high versions of the same are selling like hotcakes.
We need to legislate a maximum size for passenger cars, as the latest batch of Q7/XWhatever are just far too big.
We do not have the space or infrastructure found in the USA so let's stop driving their stupid vehicles.

The majority of Q7's and similar sized SUV's I see around my way are driven by sole occupants, usually female.
A people carrier would be more practical for those with 5 kids though these days having 3 or more is frowned upon.
There was a similar thread earlier in the week about widening width restrictions to cater for SUV's, people should buy cars which are appropriate for the roads as they are rather than expecting infrastructure to be modified.
