I'm considering changing the daily diesel hack for a vectra (que masses of abuse!...) and my budget puts my squarely between a car with a late DTi engine and an early CDTi.
I've done a small amount of homework and have gathered that the old 2.0 DTi engine is fairly gutless unless you have either an SRi or go for the 2.2
As for the CDTi it seems much more upto date and is probably much more refined. My question is really, what are they like to live with in the real world? and am I going to really regret buying DTi instead of the CDTi?

I've not had a chance to drive either yet so any help would be very useful.

Cheers guys.

Had both the DTI and CDTI(150) in vectra company hacks

The DTI was less refined than the CDTI but it was more reliable and was still going strong when it was upgraded at 4 years and 180K miles did not let me down once

The CDTI is a smoother drive and more refined BUT they are not as reliable mine has had a problem with the injectors and now requires a new clutch and some other work totaling around £2k and it has done 160k but it does feel 'tired' far more than the DTI as i remember

Depending on your usage and mileage personally i think the DTI will be far cheaper to run.

If it's a Vectra, the engine you want is the 1.9CDTi-120, which is the 8v engine (denoted by silver CDTI on the bootlid). None of the EGR/inlet manifold issues of the 150hp/16v unit, same torque but a little less power flat out. Remaps to 150hp. Should see well over 50mpg on the combined cycle.

Avoid the 2.0DTi in the Vectra. It's a reliable lump apart from the injection pump dying if you run out of fuel, or use cheap diesel. Quite expensive for a refurb. They're also slow as st. I had that engine in a Mk4 Astra and it was just about bearable. The heavier Vectra would be heading well into dangerously slow territory.

In have a Signum 2.2 DTI, basically its ok, seems reliable, pretty underpowered for a 2.2 unit, it also sounds quite course, but no to "do it down" it does its job well for me, and averages 45mpg or around 530 miles per tank, with both m4 cruise and london traffic.

Coming from a 6cyl 530d perhaps I am being critical, but that was sooo smooth in comparison

Update!
Just been to look at a 2007 (bit newer than I was thinking) CDTi 120, looked pretty good. Got home, bid for it on ebay and won it!
Hopefully pick it up some time next week. It was an absolute steal!
I'll put some pics up once I get her home.
Thanks for the advice peeps

I have DTI 2.0 16V, and it has done 371,000KM (230,000 miles) so far. The EGR were replaced at around 300,000km (186,000 miles). Some hoses and pipes were replaced occasionally, but were always a cheap fix. Never had a fuel pump problem. The only problem is that it takes some seconds for the Turbo to kick in, and for many young people, these few seconds are far too long. Consequently, many of these «racing drivers» end up complaining about 2.0 DTI engine in vectra. If you want reliability and a car for enjoyable cruising than 2.0DTI is pretty much what you want! However, if you are one of those who change their front tires eery year, stay away from this car!
