You will have to check what you need for your purpose, the minimum MSA requirements is 2.25l AFFF for racing, but I have no idea about track days etc, The original Ferrari unit was pretty small.

Have just seen that the well respected and helpful Mr Walker has a nice low mileage 308 GTS for sale, no doubt this won't be around for long at the advertised price. I would guess it will be a great buy for it's new owner and well prepared before delivery.

I wonder how long ago the VCAR assignation remains the most important impact on value? 1991 is a long time to show up any issues with rebuild etc. With a mileage sub 20k I guess it is about 15/20k which seems a bit harsh. May be the change to Rosso also has an impact too?

I have been offered this car elsewhere. I spoke to Tim about it, and he said it was in excellent condition and worth around 20k more without VCAR. Oddly, there's no real sign of damage, a little bit to he O/S rear but it's baffling everyone who's looked at it. It seems more likely to have been stolen/recovered, or perhaps a fire (or who knows, perhaps a fat-fingered clerical error!). It presents really well (as they say of cars once they get above about 50k) - a few iffy details like the boot carpets being the wrong material and the windows not going up properly, plus a weak syncro on first - all of which will be remedied. The mileage can't be warranted but seems about right, though the respray isn't perfect (may just need a good polish) and the history (especially recently) is a bit patchy, but it's pretty much par for the course, and I'm being very picky.

I agree that the 20k difference seems harsh - the car has been inspected by at least 2 respected specialists who vouch for its integrity. I don't like getting caught up in what is frankly a pointless devaluing exercise - as a vehicle (and I have driven it), it's very, very good - and certainly better than a lot of the 308s I have recently seen offered at auction. But then market value is nothing but sentiment.

I'm going to decide in the next 24 hours whether to pursue it. It is such a good car that it shouldn't be so heavily discounted. I do get the argument that most 246s have been cut and shut at some point, and in most old Ferraris the value is purely down to condition, but the numbers of 308s mean that this may well not be the case (but then good carb cars are few and far between).

Any thoughts anyone?

I've only opened this thread to daydream.... These are gorgeous cars, Ferrari styling went south after the 355 in my eyes.

I remember the biggest house on my paper round had a swimming pool, owner left his garage open every now and again, I nearly fell of my bike the first time I saw his 911 Flat nose wasn't there one day, but replaced by a 328GTB, like most of us I had a GTO poster on my wall at the time, but this was good enough. I took my camera with me every morning after that.

They say don't meet your heroes, I don't think my sack was heavy enough on my paper round as I grew to be 6'2''. When the opportunity can to drive one, I barely fit in the thing (I'm slim, there's nothing spilling over) Are there any lanky owners amongst you ? Is there a workable set up for a long drive ?

My lottery numbers will be dropping soon, so could do with the input wink

Some have taken to re-engineering the seat but the easiest solution is to get a GTS smile

On the basis this thread has been running almost a year and so far we have managed one picture of a fire extinguisher....

...here is a picture of a complete car! Did a few miles in it this afternoon and will continue to do so on those few dry days we might get this winter. Already looking forward to the Spring!

Hi ro55a. No, afraid not...I've had it for four years and the previous owner had had it for 20!

Thanks ro55a.

It's strange how a car will worm its way into your affections AFTER you've sold it!! I sorely miss my 308GTS - didn't realise what a good one it was until I tried to find another!

Slightly off topic, but it's surprising how different a carb 308 and a 328 are to drive, given they seem so similar.

Anyway...any more pictures anyone?? Period '80s shots maybe? The Lambo boys are knocking spots off us...have a look at the Espada and Countach threads - even if you don't own one it's an interesting read (or maybe I should get out more)!!

It's amazing how much difference the convex wheels on ABS cars make to the appearance.

This is a 308 I owned earlier this year. Bought it as a keeper (completely un-messed about, been off the road for 20 years, needed quite a bit of work) but then prices went mad and I couldn't justify hanging on to it. Needless to say, I'm regretting it now!

I believe the car is off to a new owner in the Far East. He's got a bit of a gem (IMHO)!

In reply to your original post, I'm a 328 GTS owner and live in the Bristol area - I know of a couple of other cars in the area. One good place to meet up is at the Avenue Drivers Club which is an informal car club that meets in St Anne's Square in Bristol every month (Sunday morning).

I'm starting to get a good idea of the specialists in the area - although thankfully the car has been so reliable (touch wood)

Good to see the post from ilovecaterhams. I am also a Bristol 328 owner who has attended the very popular meeting in Queens Square Bristol since 2010 ( my car is pictured on the latest flickr spread). Not too many 328's around in Bristol(?), sadly the metallic LHD blue car has moved elsewhere I believe. Would be great to get local 308 and 328 together at some time in 2015, Queens Square perhaps ?

Oops. I never was very good at directions.

There are two other local 328 owners who regularly attend Castle Combe race events, and park at Tower corner - on occasion we've had all three parked together. The chap who owns the 328 GTB also has a lovely blue 308, so he occasionally comes in that one.
