Thats a fantastic idea IMO! RobCrezz said:
Interesting conversion! I like it.
Cant help thinking a Honda S2000 F20C motor (or a CTR K20A if it could be mated to the rx8 gearbox) would be more suited?
I imagine there is a noticable difference in price and availability between the K20 engines, and the common as muck Vag 1.8TCant help thinking a Honda S2000 F20C motor (or a CTR K20A if it could be mated to the rx8 gearbox) would be more suited?

Perfect swap, I'm not so sure. What the VAG lump makes up for in torque it lacks in character, aren't you just creating a japanese 330 coupe.
I'd be interested to know how far back you can push the 1.8T because the thing with the wankel was that most of the weight was pushed behind the front wheels iirc. Even if the 1.8T lump weighs the same the distribution may change and therefore the way the car handles.
Still overall the tuning aspect of the engine is interesting and its nice to see. Please keep us updated.

yes i wonder where he got he idea from !!!!!! , the boxes are strong , 6 speed will take 500 no probs
I'd been asked to fit a VAG engine to an RX8 by the kit car guys in the unit accross the way ages before I heard about what you were doing Craig but the guy bailed out, the reason he asked us was because we specialise in fitting the VAG 20v engine to non VAG cars and have supplied kits all over the world for a few years now (MG ZR, MG ZS, Rover 620, Rover 100 eeek!! and not forgetting the Elise and Exiges), it was only when the twins mentioned how cheap they were after you'd bought one that I started looking on egay and bought a couple. I was actually told you were fitting an LS to yours! Anyhow it will be interesting to see how we both tackle it :-)Rover 200 (shorter ign leads were on order!!)
Not sure how tinker is mounting his but the front of the timing belt cover sits behind the centreline of the front wheels on my car.

Hi Martin , I don't think the car warrants a Ls motor as I costs to much , the vag motor should work well I hope !!!
I agree with you to some extent but my Firenza didn't warrant an LS2 either but I still wanted it and fitted one in !The VAG engine will work great and because it's really short compared to other 4 pots makes it the only sensible choice given the tight space (lengthwise) we have to work with.

Very interested in this. I owned an RX8 and everything about that car is superb apart from the engine (had to chuckle at the dig at the VAG lump not having character!) The most exciting thing about the stock RX8 engine is the excitement about when its going to break.
Are any of these conversions well developed now in terms of reliability etc in the same way the Elise conversions are? What are the costs involved? I have a golf I'd gladly chuck in for a rex with a proper engine in it.
