Yes, that idea has crossed my mind. I suppose one way might be to put the WCZ on retention and let the R plate be reinstated.

An easy win today with the tacho. Doing this a second time (and remembering how) only took 20 minutes.

I gently slid a small knife under the face to release the adhesive, then turned it so the hole at the top lines up with the corresponding hole in the clear plastic. Something with which VDO had an issue.

Screw back in, close the two halves of the cluster and slide back in the bulb strips. Push back in to the hole in the car.

I’m going back nearly two decades but from memory it was road noise from around the seals. Mine perhaps had a fault. It was mainly a summer car so not too relevant. If I had not had a better one before then it would not have been too annoying.
Thanks - it probably was a seal or fit issue as I’ve not encountered that problem, as someone said earlier it transforms the 129 into a great coupe. I get a fair amount of noise through / around the hood, but frankly it’s only fit to keep the rain out when it’s parked.

The hood is the achilles heel of the car. A regular smear of gummi pflege around the seals helps but its an imperfect design, not fit for purpose.

Very nice Toby - I’ve replied to PM & hopefully we can sort your audio desires out simply enough!.

I must say though - I have button envy. My console only has 4 switches, you have almost a full-house! (If I remember correctly, you’re missing the folding mirror switch, as UK cars didn’t come with the town/country horn setting - or it wasn’t on the P2 model).

May you have many enjoyable miles ahead.

I had four nights away camping near Swanage. I only just squeezed in all the gear and with the wind deflector up my coolbox would not fit on the rear seat nor in the boot. I will probably be looking for a smaller one.

The drive down was the usual pain of holiday traffic, dawdlers and numpties and lane-hoggers. It took 3 hours there with one Lidl stop for supplies and 95 minutes back. I think I could shave off 20 minutes if the traffic was better. I managed over the tonne once and the wind deflector made whistling noises.

Here are some snaps:

Coolbox position:

Starting to unload

90 minutes later the sea fog rolled in

The view from the top of the ridge towards Kimmeridge bay

I forgot plates so camp breakfast was straight from the pan

A walk along the coastal path to Worth Matravers.

Field-change time for the sheep

Kimmeridge Bay

Clavell Tower

'Something' Pool

Some 'top secret' archaeological find according to the estate bloke who had roped off the foot path and gave me a lift around the valley.

The SL drove faultlessly but I really need to fix the air vents as I felt a bit chilly on the way back and I wanted warm air to my feet but I suspect the stuck-open vents reduced the flow in that direction. I also have gained a dent in the OSR quarter which I don't think was there at purchase

Re the air vents, flaps controlled by vacuum. Distribution block on the nearside behind the bulkhead can crack.

Easily fixed with some epoxy..

Beautiful car there OP, I had a '97 SL60 - I regret selling that car to this day, definitely something I'll never be able to get hold of again.

I hope you have many great miles in yours!

As above, the valve block has a crack in the usual place as per the internet. As it's £76 new, I have ordered from Sandown and it should be here Friday. The date stamp on it is 08/97 so it's done fairly well. A129 800 3178 is also used in the W210 and W/C140

Lovely example, I’m following with interest.

Does this replace the CL?

I think the R129 is the sweet spot - the elegance of the R107 but with modern technology, performance & dynamics.

IMHO the R230 & R231 lack the design purity/simplicity of the 129 - beautiful.

Installed and vents' operation restored. A nice and easy job for a change

Very nice tobinen. Are you not a member of the MB club? Sandown's discounts are very generous -- 40% off servicing for older vehicles iirc and quite a tidy sum off parts.

Tobinen

Congratulations on this acquisition.... looks great and I think knowing your attention to detail with the CL you will look after and ever improve this.

Registration Plate
First thoughts were go back to the R plate, but on reflection it is not too offensive as far as NI plates go, unlike MBZ or BAZ, have you noticed it has W124 within it... I'd leave it... it is dateless ... if not a little Polish sounding,

Boot Rack
Please, ... this is not a Triumph Spitfire! It would look inappropriate.

Hard Top
Devilshly difficult to store neatly in the house.. I'd lose it or put it into a storage unit if funds allow... I have a BMW E36 Ci with a hardtop... it hardly ever gets used and remains suspended above the car in the barn, This is an open top, possibly invest in making the hood the best it can be.

Looking forward to updates on this...

Thanks both

The luggage rack idea has been shelved, probably permanently.

The plate will go but I am in no rush

The hardtop is in my bedroom. Living in a ground floor flat with no garage has its limitations.

The next priority job is the newly acquired dent in the OSR quarter. I should have time today to pop into a bodyshop for an estimate. I hope it's pullable but I suspect it is too big. Any recommendations for a PDR chap mobile or otherwise around Newbury?

The ADS is no longer. As above, it's now on Sachs springs and dampers

Shame the ADS has been ripped out. It's far less complicated than the roof hydraulics but for some reason most people cannot trouble-shoot it.

Any chance that the ADS valve block is still attached to the car in the front-right wheel arch? I would be interested in buying a spare.

Cheers.

I think there is only one part remaining (I can't recall what it is) but if it's easily checked I will take a look.

Thanks, no rush.

They may have also left the ADS ECU. If so you should be able to get decent money for that.

(EDIT: Unless it was the ECU dying that was the issue)
