Did a check on an old vehicle i once owned through the DVLA online today. It's shows the reg number/colour/CC/make and year of first reg (1977). Under the vehicle status it's say's "unlicensed", but does'nt mention SORN or when it was last taxed. The question is would it be possible to trace who own's it now, if indeed it's still alive ? Could the info just be a document trail to a dead end ? Any thoughts on the subject, or better still has anyone else come over all nostalgic as well, and managed to trace down an old piece of metal ?

I think your not going to trace it unless you know a policeman that will do it.

You can request a dvla search but it's not strictly, err legal! Essentially the dvla will pass on the details provided you need the details for what they see as a good reason, hit & run, parking enforcement etc.
I forget the legal term they use, but you'd have to come up with some cock & bull story such as you own some private land & this vehicle is parked illegally & you want to trace its owner.
Don't ask me how I know.........
Hope all's well stephen, congratulations on the league success! Crags

Think that's correct.
If you currently own the vehicle, you can (for a small fee) request the ownership history.
However, they won't reveal current ownership details to a third party unless there is a very valid requirement for the information - usually only to insurance companies or the authorities.
'Unlicenced', nowadays, normally means 'scrapped'.
