Having a terrible time trying to get the warranty on my 2003 C4S extended for another year at my local OPC and thought I'd have a rant about Porsche. The OPC has been very good in dealing with me...it's just the damn Porsche's retentive approach to the pre-warranty inspection and scandalous pricing that's Pi**insg me off.

So...
- you need to have a genuine Porsche battery fitted for the inspection even though the battery itself isn't covered by the warranty. On a 6 year old car that's worth less than £30k, it's unlikely most 996 owners will be inclined to part with £260 for a rubbish Porsche battery when you can a superior Bosch replacement from Costco for £36.99 with a 5 year guarantee

- exhaust has to be genuine Porsche part so I have to remove my aftermarket lightweight silencers and refit the original POS silencers to pass the inspection.

- there is a 1% fee if paying for the warranty by credit card, more if it's certain types of c card. Does Porsche really think that most 996 owners have £1350 burning holes in their pockets in the current economic climate? To make matters worse, if you walk to the adjacent Ferrari service department, there's no fee for paying bills by credit card. WTF!

- I'm not going to bother with an extended Porsche warranty next year and will get all my servicing done by an indy from now on.

Rant over..i'm going to have a few drinks to calm myself down now.

Absolutely proposterous. I understand that it is a way that Porsche tie you into OPC only, but personally I think they are shooting themselves in the foot. Good news for the indies.

Interesting that not all OPCs charge a fee for credit card transactions. I was led to believe this was another Porsche directive.

I don't understand the issue with the exhaust, it's made by Gemballa and I can't see how this would have an affect on other components. If it breaks fair enough I'll sort it but could a pair of high quality non standard silencers really affect other components on the car?

Surely Porsche could just say "that's a non standard part - it's not covered under your extended warranty" and as an owner you sign it off to indicate your agreement to the parts not covered.

Well said that man, not had much to do with Porsche warranties myself since it would be cheaper for me to buy another car than try to buy a warranty. It appears that Porsche will end up driving potential customers away from their UK franchises and straight to the reputable indies. Which is no fault of our OPC's as they're only following a directive. Like the man said, das c ntery...

I have a Becker bluetooth IPOD hifi - Becker make the OEM hifis but because mine doesn't have Porsche written on it I am barred from insuring my engine and gearbox.

No one was a bigger advocate of the OPC service and warranty than me. But now they can stick up up their ample back sides.

This new style of warranty is not looking good for porsche uk...as at least half my customers are not renewing and taking our plan instead so not all bad..
