Evening All,
Those of you who use car lifts, what's your preference ?

Considering one for my workshop, have used a 2 post and
to be honest I found it a pain, although access underneath
very good once it was up.
Swaying towards a 4 post now ?

Any thoughts please....

Rich. I too want one when I get a new house. I'm going 4 post as it has advantages. Opening the door for one!
Removal of heavy parts with out it being in balanced. Faster to get on and off. Bit need a bar and jack to take wheels off.

I`m pondering exactly the same at the moment but I`m swaying towards a 2 post. I was set to get a Bendpak HD-9 4 post last year but cancelled at the last minute to get a new compressor/spraying gear instead.

Looking to sort one again now, I`ve used both types in the past. I guess it comes down to what sort of jobs you want to do - the only advantages I can see with a 4 post is the ability to do tracking/alignment & being able to get the car in the air with less hassle. For 90% of jobs a 2 post is better & allows a lot more access under the car.

One thing to remember though is a 2 post lift will require a solid base(usually at least a few feet of concrete) whereas most of the 4 posts I looked at were free-standing.

2 post every time, so much more unrestricted room. Plus I can still get out of the Ro quite easily when its in situ

2 post gets my vote everytime, 4 post just doesn't allow enough access

If I may step in here (as a supplier of vehicle lifts) There are certain options to consider first, the main one is electrical supply. If you're restricted to single phase, then electro hydraulic is you're only option. The next biggest pitfall is the quality of your floor, 150mm minimum of descent concrete with no seams nor cracks. Also another decision to take into consideration is what other vehicles are you likely to want to lift?

The clue in this thread is that everyone who uses one every day says 2 post

Evening all,

Thank you for replies, very helpful with a clear winner.

So, now just to decide which I need.

My floor as far as I know is a good industrial concreted area.
I will drill some test holes to make sure, think I need to speak to the
landlord aswell.
Height is no restriction, so clear floor lift looks good.
Power can be three or single phase, however if the difference is only lift speed
then I'd go with single phase as this leaves me a spare way on the dis board.

What other advantages for using 3 phase ?

Lift would not be used as part of my everyday business, could be sat unused for
weeks at a time. Will need to be able to leave it fully raised when not being used.
Vehicles I would need to lift......well.....only one in mind, vxr8, and if it does
this ok, then all the other cars in my family are smaller, oh, perhaps my traffic van.

Ebay has loads, looking at this one:-

4000 Kg Capacity
Low Maintenance Due To Hydraulic Design
Twin Hydraulic Rams With Safety Devices
Safety Device In Both Posts
Includes 3 sets of Lift Pad Extensions for Vans / 4x4 (50mm,75mm,150mm)
Fully C.E. Approved
Low Voltage Control System (As Required)

Minimum Height 98 mm
Overall Height 3750mm
Lifting Capacity 4000kg
Maximum Lifting Height 1900mm
Overall Width 3420 mm

Also like the look of this one

Supersymmetric arms increase overall arm sweep and minimum arm reach to precisely lift vehicles.
Dual hydraulic direct-drive cylinders - conforming to ANSI standards.
With Self-Lubricating UHMW Polyethylene sliders and bronze bush.
Clear -floor design provides unobstructed floor use..
Single-point safety release.
Overhead safety shut-off device prevents vehicle damage.
Adjustable height accommodates varying ceiling heights.
Door Guards. Toe Guards.
Adjustable screw rubber pads.
Includes set of Truck Adapters.
Capacity 4T
· Lifting Time 55Seconds
· Raise Height I: 1690-1800mm
· Raise Height II: 1890-2000mm
· Overall Height: 3621/3821mm
· Overall Width: 3428mm
· Width Between Posts: 2850mm
Width Extention Kit Available extra - see my ebay listing
· Minimum Pad Height: 125mm unfortunately 27mm more than the other lift
· Motor: 2.0/3.0 HP
· Gross Weight: 670Kg
· This lift is supplied with a Single (1) Phase Motor
(Also available with a Three (3) Phase motor see my eBay listings)
· Powder Coated Finish
· CE Approved

Bit more money, but lifts to 2000mm, which would be could good as I’m over 6ft 2”

Gareth, what spec is your lift ?

Chris, your GEM lift, was that available in clear floor design ?

Merge, perhaps you could comment without breaking forum rules, otherwise look me up
www.lotuscarlton.co.uk and email me there so I have your contact details please.

TIA

This is the one that I've got http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&am...

The only down side is that the pads are lifted with spacers instead of being on screws.
