I think I’m just going to bite the bullet and get a replacement sorted. As much as I don’t want to cough up for it, I want / need to have faith in the car and the general consensus is that once the boards are corroded they’re dead, it’s just a matter of time.
I’ve spoken to Jason at BW Chiptune who can do the work and has replacement DME’s (without water damage) in stock. Because the car runs, it shouldn’t actually be too hard and he’ll be able to keep the map on the DME. He also explained the process to ensure that it doesn’t happen again, so I need to remove the entire white box at some point.

Have you Googled him...I’ve spoken to Jason at BW Chiptune who can do the work and has replacement DME’s (without water damage) in stock. I'd be interested to hear what he has to say on how to ensure it doesn't happen again.
One other thing to note. My indy also replaced the DME box - they said they warp over time and that they can get moisture build up as a result of an imperfect seal. So it would be worth checking out if you think yours is sealing properly as well. In my case they were adamant that was the cause rather than the blocked drain but I'm not quite so convinced.

I agree with you there, very little water should get on top of the white box, and there is a drain at the bottom of the box that should cope with any that finds its way in through the lid. The big one seems to be the undersized gap in the seam in the well. Removing the grommet in the well and possibly drilling an extra hole in the bottom seems worthwhile while the box is out.

I haven’t; I’ve generally only heard good things about them. Is he a bit of a cowboy?I'd be interested to hear what he has to say on how to ensure it doesn't happen again.

He said there is somewhere to pop some extra holes to prevent water build up below the box. Apparently water can build up here and make it’s way back through the one way grommet.

I'm not sure about drilling extra holes tbh. I'm sure that as long as the drains are kept on top of it would probably be fine. Drilling holes in stuff gives me the heebee geebees

I don't know personally but he has a long history of both good and bad reviews. As with all these things on the net it's hard to know what to believe though sometimes.

To be honest I’ve only really come a good reviews on here, FB and BabyBMW. Based on the conversations I had today, I had more faith in him than the ECU place in Leicester. I couldn’t quite work out where he said to pop a few drain holes; he was adamant that rye grommet should stay in place. I need to remove the DME box to get to where he was talking about.

I wouldn't use them again based off my personal experience..He no doubt knows his stuff and did a good job by all regards but he is remote and does the majority of his work from abroad.
The 2 individuals that run the workshop in hayes leave an awful lot to be desired, one in particular being highly unprofessional. enough so to firmly put me off visiting again.

I disagree. The picture attached is my car, you can see the seam sealer missing in the top right of the photo and the raised hole to the left is where the bung was fitted. Both drain onto the top of the arch liner. No reason to drill additional holes.JakeT said:
This is a great reminder as I need to take by DME box apart and make sure it drains okay. I occasionally get the ‘trickling water sound’ at higher speeds if it’s been sat in rain for some time. I should do this before the DME takes a bath.
One of the chaps on here had a DME failure due to it before, maybe Mervin? Or MajorMantra.
Also worth noting, if you're hoping to eliminate all potential sources of water noises: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...One of the chaps on here had a DME failure due to it before, maybe Mervin? Or MajorMantra.

When I visited the workshop in April, the two guys there were Jason and his son. They were great fun, gave me a ton of advice I’ve since acted upon. And most importantly, I was really happy with the tune Jason did.He no doubt knows his stuff and did a good job by all regards but he is remote and does the majority of his work from abroad.

If you do use Jason, ask him about the tune he did on his M5!

Thank you. I’ll take a look too. My sound sounds distinctly from behind the dash, but good to know. Gassing Station | BMW General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
