Technically, those are not run flats: https://www.tirerack.com/upgrade-garage/what-are-m...

"However, since they don't meet all of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) run-flat tire operating limits under all permitted vehicle loads, they cannot be branded as run-flat tires."
This is an issue then

and that not the only manufacturer that lists and make */MOE tyres.

Sounds to me like the x-drive is the weak link here, not the tyres.
I am not saying the tyres are the weak link, just that fitting the wrong ones exacerbates other issues.
A 4wd system should be able to cope with sections of road that has different levels of grip without issue, otherwise what's the point of having a 4wd system?
Questionable BMW engineering, maybe deliberately so.
That statement has what to do with BMW* rated tyres?

Well, if you make a car with this mechanism that only runs well on particular tyres, throws up drivetrain shunting issues on uneven roads then it's not the tyres fault it's the cars'

When I purchased our X5M, the previous owner had fitted Pirelli P zeros all around ready for sale, the front being AR marked and rears N0 as the * rated Michelin super sports were on back order,.. Within 500miles it developed hesitation on acceleration, long story short new * rated tyres sorted it. When I compared the front and rear old tyres there was quite a difference in their height, hence causes the transfer case problems. The X5M uses a staggered tyre setup, can’t see any of the above being an issue on a square set up.

My understanding is that this only applies when the tyres are staggered - wider on the rear. Ever the sceptic, when my X5 was due for replacements, I fitted non star marked all around.

Not long afterwards, on a trip to Germany, I noticed a whine coming from around the centre of the car at 60mph, which disappeared above or below that speed.

On my return, I replaced all 4 with star marked and guess what? the whine disappeared. I'm assuming it was coming from the transfer box and obviously had something to do with the non * tyres. An expensive lesson learned.

640d doesn't have a transfer box?
