Hi there,

I'm a proud new owner of a used Golf SE 1.4 TSI (122ps) however I have a few questions. It was bought used from a main dealer just over a week ago. It's a 10 plate with about 25,000 miles on the clock.

1) On the motorway cruising at 75mph (indicated) continuously for about 100miles I only seem to be able to max out the mpg at 35. This was with a tank of Shell V-Power. I've now filled the car with normal unleaded, and have the same journey in reverse on Thursday so will see if there's any difference, but bearing in mind that I think myself to be quite an economical driver (shift up before 3000rpm which is what the car usually suggests) and no quick acceleration in 5th or 6th, could there be something else wrong?

2) I have a feeling the front offside tyre has a slow puncture. I think it may be a very slow puncture. I made it from London to Exeter and then I noticed the tyre was a bit short on air (about 20PSI rather than 29PSI) so filled it up. I then drove between Exeter and Bristol a few times before it showed any signs of losing pressure. Is this something the dealer should look at/sort out?

3) I'm quite interested in getting the RNS-510 installed. I know of vwcruise however are there any others I might consider (except main dealers unless you know one that doesn't charge an extortionate amount)?

4) I've done a search, but I seem to be no use. Are there any good guides on the forum for beginners about cleaning their nice new cars? I've heard of the 2 buck method etc, and also claying but not entirely sure what to do.

5) Finally, is a multi function steering wheel worth it? Always fancied one, but obviously buying used there was a limit to how I could spec the car. What are your thoughts?

Cheers

Welcome to the forum! The SE TSI is certainly one of the best buys with the MK6 Golf.

Unsure on all of yours points, but I'll respond to these two:

3) RNS 510 is an easy enough retrofit, you can pick the unit up from eBay for about £400 - £500 and it will just slot instead of the existing RCD 310 unit. Quite a few guides about, bit of discussion here - http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

5) MFSW is on the other hand a difficult retrofit unfortunately, probably not really worth it. You'd need the Highline computer also to get the most from it

Thank you.

I note that some Golf Mk6 variants have a little shark fin antenna on the back which my car doesn't. Is that purely for DAB or would I need that for navigation?

You'll need a seperate GPS antenna but they are relatively inexpensive (quite often come bundled with the RNS) and can fit in the dash

I have a shark fin on my MK6, and I don't have DAB or Navigation.

All the MK6s I've come across have only had it if they originally came with factory Nav, could yours have had the unit removed? Unless its from a phone kit of some sort.

I've got a 2010 SE 1.4 TSI 122 with the 7-speed DSG box. In 7th, 100mph is 3400rpm.

Measured over several tankfuls of petrol, it always averages around 36mpg. The first 15 miles of my journey home consist of a bit of traffic then a dual carriageway blast. It's not unusual to see 28mpg for that part of the trip. On a longer run cruising at 80ish you should see it creep up to nearer 40mpg. To see anything even close to the claimed mpg you'd need to be barely resting your foot on the accelerator. As with most cars, the claimed figures are complete lies.

I have the 6-CD stereo in mine, but no sat nav. My car does not have the sharks fin aerial.

Listen out for any rattles on start-up. If it rattles, and is progressively getting worse, you'll need the timing chain sprockets & tensioner replaced. Mine needed this done at 37000 miles. I was a bit annoyed, having bought a petrol car that sounded worse than a diesel for the first few seconds!

Despite the above, and needing a new clutch & mechatronic unit in the gearbox (also at 37000 miles), I'm still pleased with it. The midrange punch is quite surprising, and it will hit 100 from a standstill as quickly as my old Astra 2.2 coupe. It's got enough performance to surprise some supposedly quicker cars, and the effect of the turbo is such that if I didn't know what the power output was, I'd probably guess nearer 150bhp. In fact, I recall seeing a magazine article a while ago where someone had put one on a rolling road to get a reading before a remap, and saw well over 122bhp out of a bog standard car (up in the 130's I think).

I'm going to give a motorway journey at 65mph a try. Supposedly I should get MPG. See what happens.

Anywhere reputable (except the bay) where I might be able to get a RNS-510?

Welcome.

To answer your 4th question, try the Bodywork & Detailing section of the forum (it's in the Technical section of the forums).
I'd post a link but posting from my phone.

Strange. I got it brand new and it's never had a factory fitted NAV and it doesn't have a phone kit. It's a SE estate if that makes any difference?

Yes that will be why, all the estates have a shark fin antenna for radio reception. The estate is technically just a MK5 with a new front-end and dashboard (note the old style wing mirrors and door handles etc) so there are a few minor differences such as this.

I should have been clearer in my first post!

Do you know why the estates have a shark fin?

Not sure exactly, I'd guess it might be because the MK6 hatchback had the radio antenna integrated into the rear windscreen but the late MK5s required a standalone antenna.

Looks cool anyway!

Next question. Excuse the l33t paint skills, but I found some wear in the paint that was originally unnoticed. I'll try get a pic tomorrow, but for the time being where I'm looking is just below the black arrow where it changes panels. The edge of the panel with the arrow on is predominantly white, as if it's been scratched, but I'm unsure as to how it could have been scratched there?!

Could the front bumper have been replaced due to an incident? Is the dealer obliged to tell me?

How long have you had the car?

Our car picked up several 'supermarket scrapes' exactly where you're describing. The result of some careless tt (or in my case several careless tts) bumping into it while parked.

Think you've worried me now. Had a listen to the car starting (as I've never actually listened from the outside) and I can hear a clicking for the first 5/10 seconds. I'll try record the noise and upload it.

Also, I'll get a picture of the white scuff. Is it possible that it is the wax/polish collecting on the corners? It seems to have happened on a few other places and I managed to wipe a bit of it off, but not much. Hmmm.

One of my kids has a Micra, and I'm used to that rattling for a couple of seconds on start-up (until the oil gets into the hydraulic tappets). I only really noticed it on the Golf when it had got much noisier that the Micra, and for longer. As I said, it really did sound worse than a diesel for a while after starting. If you want to get really worried, Google "VW TSI timing chain problem".

Interestingly they've switched back to Belts for the new generation of EA211 TSIs in the MK7. It's all on the hush at the moment and the press aren't reporting it as they are scared of VAG. Apparently they are designed to last the life of the engine, but we all know what a disaster the old cambelt engines where.

MY TSI 122 makes a little rattle when cold started as well, assumed it was nothing too serious as it quickly disappeared but will have to get it checked now!

As for fitting the RNS510, it really is simple and I got mine off eBay (reputable seller) for a bargain. Fitted it myself as well (with some guidance from va1o!) and all is fine and dandy now. smile

Any pics of the car?
