Interestingly they've switched back to Belts for the new generation of EA211 TSIs in the MK7. It's all on the hush at the moment and the press aren't reporting it as they are scared of VAG. Apparently they are designed to last the life of the engine, but we all know what a disaster the old cambelt engines where.
I just can't believe that a company with the resources that VAG has at its disposal has designed a chain-driven cam set-up (which should be miles better than a belt) and managed to completely mess it up. Our old Previa had a chain (as the engine access was limited), and it was still going strong when we sold it at 140,000 miles. Done properly, they should just about last forever.

When you add this issue to the well-known DSG problems, you could be forgiven for thinking that VAG's engineering has gone off the rails in recent years. Very disappointing.

I agree, for the last 15 years they have been mechanically disappointing. Shame as they are otherwise the best in the business,

DSG is from BorgWarner so not all down to VW.

Some MK4 R32s seem to suffer camchain issues whereas the MK5 seems to he better so they obviously did something.

Maybe so, but VW is responsible for specifying it, testing it (as part of vehicle development testing), accepting it, and selling it to unsuspecting punters who thought they were buying a well-engineered car.

This must be costing them a fortune, as replacement mechatronics units are factory order items, built & set-up to suit a particular model (or so I was told, to justify the car spending almost 6 weeks at the dealers). I'm glad my TVR isn't "as reliable as a Volkswagen"! smile

I've seen it mentioned in several places - the 1.2 stays with a chain.

The new 1.4 switches off a couple of cylinders when cruising.

Nope that's what I thought originally, but if you look it up in ETKA they are using a new belt driven EA211 version of the 1.2 TSI with a different engine code to its chain driven predecessor. Unlikely to be wrong as the data comes from Germany, not the morons in Milton Keynes. Same family as the 1.0 in the UP! etc.

Yes that's true, I'm looking forward to trying it. Apparently some cars won't get the cylinder de-activation technology though, was reading a review of the new Leon suggesting this.

Mechatronics units are not such a big problem for people out of warranty now as companies like ECUTesting can refurbish for £250 and a turnaround of 3 days.

If these guys are refurbing them, you can be sure VW are too.

It depends is the answer!

Originally it was not offered for the MY2009 cars

For the MY2010 cars it became standard for all cars with the 6 speed and 7 speed auto DSG, Bluemotion models and SE BlueMotion Technology models. Otherwise a £90 options

For MY2011 onwards it was standard with all models.

And how do I find that bit of information out?

Does a car registered in April 2010 mean it is "my2010"?

From the VIN. Yours could be either 2010 model year or an early 2011. If the 10th digit is A its 2010, B is 2011.

Ok perfect. It is an A so I have a MY2010 model. Therefore, on my 6-speed 1.4 TSI engine I should have hill-start assist?

Also, yet another question (ps. thanks so much for the help so far!!).

I've already driven over 750miles since getting the car 3 weeks ago. My service code is QG1 and the last (and only) service was at 16000 miles. It's at 30,000 miles now. Should I be thinking about oil change etc...?

It'll will certainly be a MY10 as the model year tends to switch over in manufacturing around week 22

No, as for 2010MY only the 6-speed DSG got hill-start.

QG1 means its on variable 'Longlife' servicing, so the car will prompt when it requires one

If you want to know when the next variable service is due.

Switch on the ignition, plug in seatbelt to clear seatbelt alarm, if ice alarm is flashing wait until it stops and then hold trip reset for 2 secs and number of miles and time to next service pops up.

I think you may need highline display for this to work.

A highline DIS is something I don't have. Want to get one installed though, although I've heard the whole instrument cluster needs to be changed. redface

Is the hill start assist something that can be enabled with a VAGcom? (Similar to the tyre pressure warning system)

And also, does anyone have experience with:

VW warranties. Wondering if I should get one or not? (2010 car with 30,000 miles on the clock)

VW servicing plans. Are they worth it?

Another reply from me.

Took the car to a garage. Tyre fixed for £15 - all good.

Now, I pointed out the scratch on the edge of the panel and the guy reckons it's ben resprayed. Surely when buying a used car from a main dealer this is something they should point out? I feel a bit let down by the dealer who claimed it was accident free and the only problems with the paint work were the small dents probably from someone else's door (or something like that). How should I approach the dealer? Furthermore, could this explain a knocking sound I can hear around the B-pillar?

Cheers

Holy moly, have you got any further info on this?
