I`ve always liked the 500 E-class . I`m currently running a C36 and a 300TE so a 500E / E500 may be the way forward . As I use the cars quite a bit , fuel may well be an issue though . Nice pictures .

Fuel is never an issue, 20mpg all the time so just make sure you get 20mpg in a fun way haha

Car looks incredible, a fine fine purchase.

I did give serious consideration to a 500E when adding to my stable, but went for the C43 simply on the basis of not needing the extra space and on the car being that much newer. I'd very much like a ride in one though - as an ex Porsche owner I'd be willing to bet they thoroughly sorted the 500E

Thanks. Gave a tailgating Boxster a shock on the A12 the other day. He evidently wasn't expecting a K-reg E-class to hitch up its skirts and blast off at warp speed when the path ahead cleared. When he caught up, he went past veeeeerrrry slowly, taking a good look, before scooting off into the distance.

All rather fun.

Heaven forbid biggrin! No, I'm originally from Suffolk - near Orford. Still got family up there.

My 92 E500 has a fault; starts first time from cold. Runs and about 80degrees will stutter. Stop the car and it will not restart untill stone cold.Main MB dealer in stockton can not read codes!!!failed to fix fault. Currently car is off the road as I am out of ideas. Last time out it cut out completly 100yards from home...I am about to change plugs, wires, dist. caps and rotors.
Previous records show harness change(verified)in 2006. Anyone got suggestions because MB dealer is not interested.

Try Malcolm Hyde (Hydes of Boroughbridge) 01423 326688 . He`s ex Merc Harrogate who has recently set up on his own and looks after my Mercs . He`s a clever chap and obviously not too far from Stockton. Micky

Thanks for this I have just spoken to Malcolm, extremly encouraging and when I get this car running again I will be down to Boroughbridge, 25mins away for appraisal. This particular car is not the best example but it is solid, has high Kilometres but up untill just a couple of years ago had been well looked after and serviced. Full top end rebuild in Majorca MB main dealer with all receipts.Interestingly untill it developed this intermittent fault and was being used regularly it was returning 25mpg with cruise control operating, Note I have not used it in Urban driving much, and this is when the fault manifested itself

Hello everyone.

I'm new to this forum, but I do have a 500E so I thought I would say hi.

Had some poor running problems with mine a few years ago, took it to the dealer who pluged it into their fancy computer only to tell me they were not sure what was wrong with it. I took it upon myself to fix it and firstly looked at the dizzy's and rotor arms, no wonder it did not run right they were finished! Put on new ones, job done!

I know that one of you other guys has already pretty much said the same thing about this issue but I thought I would mention it.

If you have any questions I will be happy to try to help. I will also try to put some pics up.

I changed the caps and rotors on mine and one of the caps showed signs of arcing, the idle improved when the engine was hot after that.

Also use genuine caps, despite the eye watering price of around £300 for both caps and rotors, the pattern ones are seemingly lasting a very short distance in America.

The E500 is running! Changed caps rotors plug and coil leads pus plugs. All for genuine Bosch parts. Started first time. Idles through temp. range and starts from hot mid range and cold. Very smooth. One of the coil leads was so corroded it is a wonder that four cylinders ever ran let alone have an intermittent fault. The leads I took off were a mixture of Bosch and Beru of different ages. Unfortunately I have clumsily managed to break one of the four wires in the air flow meter. Does this mean I need a new air flow meter immediately. Doesnt seem to effect runnng presently. Some clips and a rear mounting on a rocker cover need replacing for the air filter assy. No climate control - this might be the next job after, new tyre, replace front strut and spring etc. etc.

Yes you need a new MAF. Get the part number and go to a Bosch service centre. Cheaper than the dealer.

I will check out prices at Bosch and also what is available from USA.As car seems to be running well at the moment - How does the one broken wire in the MAF manifest itself in engine performance?
Powersteering fuid leak somwhere on the front as well!

My 190 had a power steering pipe leaking which I did nothing about for ages. However the leaking fluid wqas going on to the engine mount and eventually that failed too :/.

I'd have thought you'd get an engine management light (they have that right?) if the MAF was not working. You could always try unplugging it completely then trying running the engine. But this could make the light stay on until cleared by computer if that's how it works on the E500 so bear that in mind.

The E500E has a different jetronic (LH rather than just L I think) so this AFM could be expensive as it's likely not shared with the S class/SL.
