No, I would imagine that the claimed 99 is just progression of fuel development. It will not do any harm at all.

Higher RON ratings are better for your engine - they will serve to resist detonation (not that your engine should do this anyway) even if the engine management doesn't make use of them.
IIRC the Tesco(/Greenergy) achieves 99RON through use of 10% ethanol - if your engine doesn't mind it then fine.

There was an edition of Fifth Gear programme about 2 or 3 years ago where they tested a WRX STi with Optimax, V Power and Tesco's 99. Each time they reset the ECU, emptied and flushed the tank etc to make the comparison as close as possible. I'm not convinced you'll find the footage now (try YouTube...?) but the results were very clear. The Tesco fuel made substantially more power (I recall it was something like 10-15% more in those controlled conditions). OK, we all have M3s not WRX's but the principle was established. Since then, I've always run my E36 evo on 99 and it is peachy. 95RON fuel won't do it any good for the reasons stated earlier in this thread; equally, there should be nno problem using a higher grade like 99 or even higher if you can get it. My understanding (and this was previously available on a Tesco partner's website when I looked into it about a year ago) is that the Tesco stuff is normal fuel with an additive like race fuel which when diluted with the normal stuff makes a 99RON fuel.

Used to fuel my E39 M5 on nothing but optimax or v-power.
My current M3 get Super at wherever I can get it with the occasional normal if its just a steady and long motorway run (read as a weekend away with the missus). I find running on normal makes the car feel like its missing so find its best avoided.

99 RON, is a slower burn fuel, which is why you can run a more advanced ignition curve, it also protects you from detonation which is an engine breaker.. it actually has better expansion properties and does make more power.. specially on the fizzy turbo 4 pots.. mine likes 99 and drinks it like theyre going to run out..!
You can run both equally on the road or track, 99 does have an edge..
the ECU map handles both very well..
I'm not clear if the S54 engine has independant knock sensors and moves the map to get the most out of the fuel, or if it runs a static map..but it does run better on 99 for sure..

GARBAGE..... trousers down, and 40 strokes with the studded padal for that statement..!
1 stroke deduction for each bhp the fuel gets... but its still gonna hurt plenty....!
Its better for sure.. but only to the tune of 10-15 bhp.. but it does pull harder all the way up..

+1I also tried Texaco super which seemed better than Vpower.Vpower is too expensive and makes for a rough overrun.
Tesco 99 is the cheapest and best ihave tried-their 95 is awful though-the bottom end is so rough,throttle response is numbed and the engine sounds less crisp.
I doubt using 99 would be a 40bhp gain though,probably 20 at most.Its a driveability gain more than anything.
