I was in Bluewater on Saturday with The Good Lady and, as is the norm, I had a bit of a browse in some of the jewellers while she did the make-up/handbag/shoe thing. Now I don’t normally look at Rado, I associate them with the all black ceramic parallel bracelet Ceramica models which really don’t appeal to me, but walking past the display in Ernest Jones one particular model caught my eye.

A couple of weeks ago or so I learnt of Rado’s tungsten-carbide “hard metal” cases, and thinking that this watch was made of such material I asked the sales assistant if I could have a gander. The watch itself aesthetically looked OK in the display, but no more than that.

“Why don’t you try it on?” said the assistant.

“Thank you, I think I will” I replied.

Can you tell how this going to end up?

Now if there is one thing that I’ve learnt about watches it’s that what can look fantastic in a perfectly lit display can look very ordinary on the wrist, and that the very ordinary can look sublime when being worn. This one fell into the latter for me and in a big way at that, and after handing it back to the assistant and giving it an hour’s thought I decided that it had to be done, so I did.

And so here it is, the ceramic Rado D-Star, which I now happen to think looks rather splendid off the wrist as well.

Now with photos the right way up, and edited to appease mr NeMiSiS! wink

I know that Rado don't get much time on here, but I've seriously fallen for this one. It'll be a perfect foil to my normal daily wearer, my Sinn UX GSG, and along with my Longines LLD and GW3000 G-Shock I'm slowly coming around to the idea of stripping back the rest of my collection.... eek

I really like that and whilst I don't own any I am a big fan of Rado. Normally my browsing takes me to the black ceramic ones but I seriously like that.

They seem to me to be a watch that always catches the eye.

Your photography is fantastic, whatever you do for a living give it up and do this.

I think the pocket billiards shot is unnecessary though.

…weathers been nice today, supposed to be nice all week.

Cheers, not too sure if I get the weather ref though.

The GF has always said that I'm impervious to hints, and I'm feeling especially slow today hehe

I like Rados. Really wanted a ceramica, but it just didn't suit me.

I clicked on this thread without holding much hope as I'm not usually a fan of Rado.

But I really like that.

I quite like the reissue Diastars, particularly the one with the internal bezel. When are you going to replicate this?

Have to say I was a bit like that, although Rado have certainly always 'gone their own way' and I could appreciate that although the designs weren't for me they were certainly of a style and the materials used were always interesting.

But I have to say that that's really nice, I like the case shape and it's again of a style, but subtley so, so yeah..a surprising thumbs up, definitely!

Great watch OP, looks superb! No wrist shot?

I love my Rado. I got a platinum (in colour - that's what Rado call it) Sintra Multifunction 6 years ago for my 21st. It's very understated, suits jeans and t-shirt as well as it does a suit, I love the fact that it's not as well known as the 'mainstream' brands and is still in pristine condition thanks to the ceramic bracelet.

I'll say it before someone else does, 'I wouldn't pay that much for a quartz fashion watch' (with reference to mine). rolleyes

But I digress. OP, congrats and enjoy your watch! cool

The rotating anchor on the dial is unusual, why did you not tell us about it?

Rado reminds me of middle aged German men on all inclusive holidays.

The black sleek ceramic, almost feminine watch worn by most of the sun bed hogging, none queuing, manor less morons who wear white toweling socks with leather sandals, donning Speedoes for Lunch.

I can't see past the Rado motif, I am scared for life.biggrin

If it had Swatch written on it like it should have, I would speak more highly of it, the viewing case rear and lightly decorated movement is really nice, only spoilt by the Rado printed on the rotor.

But hey, what do I know.

Just off to lay my towel out so I can ensure I get the best bed for the morning…wink

Enjoy.
Er... can I have a whoosh parrot please? confused

Phew..., glad I'm not the only one biggrin

As for the anchor, I forgot to mention it. The rotating anchor is a bit of a Rado trademark, the anchor is mounted on a tiny pin so it can rotate with the movement of the wrist in the same way as Rolls Royce wheel hub badges stay the right way up even when the vehicle is moving. The folding bracelet clasp is also made of titanium so there's a bit of a techie mix of materials going on.

I won't be trying that trick with the lathe though in the link posted earlier, I'm guessing that the watch case there is the tungsten-carbide version as opposed to the ceramic of this one, cool trick though thumbup
