It is best if you replace the word deposit with non refundable intial payment.

This.

In my case - I don't figure that the 9100 (or whatever it is) is much less than the depreciation I'd have suffered had I just gone and bought one. And at the end I don't need to sell the car - I'm st at selling cars, so would have lost another 2-4K there frown

À chacun son goût, but the ugly R172 with its fussy, overstyled exterior (AMG bodykit in particular) made even worse with a diseasel engine.....??

The 'little boy' test will see people laughing at anyone in a lorry-engined convertible with the roof down.

I've been considering an SLK 250 CDI and was pleasantly surprised by Dog Star's comment re its performance vs the SL500. I've enjoyed the low rev urge of a diesel in Mercs and Skoda VRs's over the years and would like to hear more from Dog Star on the SLK's performance. I appreciate that objectively against the clock the SLK CDI must be slower than the SL500, but is it that low rev performance that makes the SLK seem to perform so well?

At sub-motorway speeds it feels quicker - there's quite a good punch. 0-60 times are pretty similar iirc. When you get to higher speeds it definitely loses out though; kickdown in the SL at, say 80mph and it has a lot of go; the SLK just isn't the same. But for most circumstances (ie. urban or country road) the SLK feels quicker.

Having said that I can take the performance deficit since in the four weeks Ive had the car it has cost me nothing in repairs, and it's not going to. The SL would have cost me £500 (approx monthly repair costs spread over time of ownership (4 years))

Thanks for the feedback Dog Star. Just need to know now if that 250 CDI low down urge isn't too dissimilar to the SLK 350's sub 60/70 performance, then I can save £10k or so over the 350's purchase price whilst enjoying broadly similar everyday usable performance and getting c.40% better fuel consumption (I'm aware they won't sound the same!).

I'd suggest trying to get a test drive of both to see what you think.
I'm not really qualified to speak re. the 350 as that is going to have a lot more performance than my SL I suspect.

Bump here smile
Are offers like this still available?
Reason being starting a 12 month placement at circa 20k paid per year but parents helping out with rent and with student loans after my food etc... should have £650 left per month to either save or spend on stuff.
Anyway thought could sell my clio and get one of these if they are still circa £200 per month will save me £50 a month on fuel so paying what seems like 4k after that saving to own a 30 grand car aged 20...

Keep your Clio and save it. In two years' time you'll have £15,000 in cash. Which is £15,000 more than everybody else. Besides, your parents may be less than thrilled to help you out with the rent if you spunk your money on a brand new SLK, bargain or no bargain.

Agree with the above comments, its a bit OTT to spend that much of your salary on a car even if you do have the disposable income, and remember you'd have it for 2/3 years not just the placement. A £99pcm VW UP might be sensible though.

Fair enough as I had a job at the same company sorted after university as well albeit in saudi most likely (as long as I don't fk up) in 2 years time and as I would not have to pay the VAT it seemed a good idea to me.
Will stick with the clio then and then spend 6/7k on a 130i for my 21st and save the rest like I planned initially smile

A 130i + saving sounds far better to me than a new diesel SLK. You'll love the 130i too - its a proper little hot rod.

Plus you'll actually own it. These SLK deals are great, and come the closest I've seen to making a genuine case for leasing, but never forget you've got absolutely nothing to show for all those thousands and thousands of pounds in two years when the nice man wants his shiny car back.

Yeah decided to put the extra money towards getting my own place for my placement year instead of being stuck in a student house as will be working full time and will not want people partying every night.
Just wish it was not in Winchester as even in Southampton a decent 1 bedroom flat seems to be £600 a month :/
