My wedding anniversary is coming up at the end of the month and I need some suggestions for a decent hotel.

Pricewise, I'm not too concerned as long as it isn't stupidly expensive as it's a special treat and it's also SWMBO birthday the day before and it'll take the edge off a fairly shite few months earlier in the year.

I'm in Swansea so am happy to travel anywhere that's within 2/3(absolutely maximum) hours as due to work commitments, we can only get away for 1 night during the week and I don't fancy driving half way across the country as I'll be driving 250 miles the day before and the day after our break.

2 places that are currently appealing to me are Lucknam Park near Bath and Thornbury Castle in Gloucestershire. Ideally, we'd like somewhere that's got a spa and is similar to the two hotels I've mentioned. A decent restaurant as well would help!

Has anyone got any other suggestions/tips? I've had a good look on Tripadvisor as well but I've been given some good advice on here before so I'm all ears.

I haven't been here, but it's three hours so within your time span, and gets decent reviews http://www.lakevyrnwyhotel.co.uk/

An obvious suggestion is Celtic Manor but it's not that special. It's ok, but big and a bit faceless.

Or http://www.vale-hotel.com/Home ?

Again not stayed there, but visited the other day when talking at a conference. it fits your travelling criteria. Alternatively, how long does a train to London take? Then you could stay here http://www.onealdwych.com/home.aspx

you already have the answer, Lucknam Park.

Never fails to deliver, spa facilities are in a different league to Calcot

The driveway at Lucknam is divine.......

Sorry to hijack but having just recommended LP, I'm looking for a coastal equivalent in the South West.

Burgh Island looks interesting....

Any thoughts? Otherwise we are back to LP, just fancy some walks on a beach...

I've decided to go with Lucknam Park in the end-thanks for the suggestions and I'll certainly be looking at some of the other hotels for a surprise treat later in the year! smile

I thought I should post on here with regards to my stay.

Absolutely excellent stay-the hotel was fantastic and the staff were very helpful and courteous. It was a complete surprise for the Mrs and she loved it which is the main thing. I was very pleasantly surprised by the free room upgrade, champagne, chocolates and strawberries in our room as well-I wasn't expecting that at all.

The spa was lovely although we didn't go for any treatments although we will be heading back there again.

(I still had the traditional afternoon tea though lick )
