I currently have an absolutely base trim NC2 1.8 se 5 speed, for the past year (15k miles) i've owned it i've never once been able to get it to chirp it's back wheels, it used to almost but it's getting less and less willing. The problem seems to be no matter how many revs you give it to start (or how quickly you lift the clutch up) it just slowly brings the revs down to road speed (slipping the clutch i presume) then hooks back up and goes.

It doesn't seem to slip at any other point other than hard starts but it's really annoying, even my 1.6 diesel golf making 105bhp can chirp it's tyres from a quick launch, yet my MX5 can't for whatever reason.

Very recently it's also started doing this thing where if i take off quicklyish, say 2.5k rpm and briskly let out the clutch it keeps slipping/stays at 2.5k rpm after my foot has come off the clutch until we reach roadspeed. It seems to have difficulty with the initial hookup between the 2 surfaces, is this a clutch issue or something else, please help so i can get an asbo.

Sounds like a worn and slipping clutch to me.

How far up? If it's on the usual amount I put it on it can pull away and drive along but If it's pulled absolutely all the way up, it strains then just gives up and stalls.
