My 9 yo has asked for a setup
Hes currently on the new xbox, but wants to upgrade to PC & wants a racing setup
I'd ideally like to be able to use the racing setup as well
Could the experts help me get the ideal setup
Directors budget biggrin
Budget is as little as possible without scrimping on quality
I've a boiler & garage conversion to do this year smile

Hi.

I'd recommend a Logitech G29 and a Playseat Challenge as a really good starting point, neither will break the bank and the Logitech is tried and tested, although perhaps a little dated. You could probably pick this stuff up used at a discount too.

The Logitech has Xbox and PC compatibility too so no need to upgrade for when he goes down the PC root, at which point he'll be asking for a full gaming PC and Fanatec style setup smile

Sim racing is really great to get into and I don't doubt you would enjoy this too. I play ACC as I enjoy the type of racing and cars (GT3/GT4), however stuff like Gran Turismo can be great fun especially for starting out.

I'm a beginner and just got Logitech g920 as mentioned above (the g29 is the playstation version). I got one and a playseat challenge second hand for just over £200. Easily adjustable for both myself and my son.

As other have said the logitech wheels and playseat challenge are good starting points. It would be fairly cheap to upgrade the pedals to a loadcell set up when your son gets into it. Building your own PC can save some money too.
This is pretty much how I started, I built my PC with no prior experience. Just be mindful this can get expensive the more you get into it!

I have a a Logitech G29 and a Playseat Challenge gathering dust in my garage.

Thats how I started a few years ago. Then, I got a bit carried away.

OP, if you fancy them to get you and your son going I'm open to offers.

If it helps, I mostly live in Suffolk. But, can bring them down for pickup in SW London too.

PM me through here if you're interested.

Would be nice to send these over to a fellow PHer!

I'm down in London at the moment. I'll be back up to Suffolk on Monday.

I'll PM you with details/photos then and if you're still interested we'll get it sorted.

Some general stuff on practicalities (of any sim rig stuff)

1. You need somewhere to clamp the wheel
2. You need somewhere for the person, and the brake pedals to go, so that neither of them move when they press the pedals hard

That's it really.

The playseat does all of that in a neat package, and obviously comes with the seat built in. The other option (without a seat) is a GT Omega classic stand, which is about £90 delivered...it's heavy, which again is a blesssing and a curse, but does the job.

You *can* clamp the wheel to a desk/table pretty easily but often trying to get pedals, and driver seat, so that they don't move, is much harder.

There aren't tons of wheels for the Xbox, but the G920 is, I think, the main/default choice*. If you're switching to PC many more wheels work and you may be able to save a little bit of money (like £20 or so) as you dont have to pay for the xbox licenced hardware chip inside the wheel. (PS have the same licencing/hardware requirement).

If you're practical and want to expand into the future, you can go straight to the box-section Aluminium tubes version and build your own one with fancy mounts etc.

Youtube is awash with product reviews and advice if you want to check out a specific "thing".

  • I have one and i do really like it...I am already getting tempted to upgrade to a direct drive type of wheel though.
Last thing i would say - outside ofthe console games they aren't really plug and play - on PC you really need to spend some time fidning force feedback settings (FFB) which work for the specific combination of game and wheel that you have.

@OP.

Apologies for not getting back to you. I'm still stuck in London.

I hope to be where the playseat and wheel are tomorrow.

If you're still looking I'll PM you some photos?

I'm home and I have some photos of the 920 & Playseat.

Unfortunately, the email contact through your profile won't allow me to send them to you.

So, if you wish, email me through here and I'll reply.

If the main focus is Sim racing don't discount consoles. To play a modern game on a PC at 1080p is going to need a graphics card in the £250ish range, and for 2k graphics you're probably spending nearly as much on a graphics card as you'd spend on a console that could happily drive a 4k monitor.

Replied.

Plus, there's a bonus photo of a friend's gravestone, sent in error. That's not for sale!

Hi OP.

I'm home. Are you still in need of the seat/wheel set up?

If so wing me over an email.
