Taking the grandkids that way for a few days.

I notice that the definition of it stretches covers a fair distance.. Are there any spots better than others where they might find an ammonite or similar?

Lyme Regis. You can do a tour (we didn't but saw one which looked interesting and found a large ammonite) or just follow anyone with a large rucksack and questionable personal hygiene. biggrin The old town dump is also falling onto the beach so there's heaps of other sold tuff to be dug up too.

Or Kimmeridge but it'll tend to be smaller stuff, however has the advantage of being where the large pliosaur that's been in the news recently was found. Housed in the Etches Collection in Kimmeridge village.

Defo’ Kimmeridge, we went there last month, it’s a lovely location, you will love it.
The museum in the village is new, https://www.theetchescollection.org/. I’m sure the kids, and you, will find it very interesting. Nice restaurant/cafe opposite. Then take the toll road to Kimmeridge Bay. Park up on the cliff top with spectacular views. Then down to the beach where you can explore for hours.
Remember to be discreet , you are not supposed to dig or damage stuff, and remove ammonites.

Also Kimmeridge is close to the scenic parts of the coast such as Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, which I'm sure even little kids would think were cool.

(Bovington Tank Museum is that part of the world too, if you want some vehicle related content).

I agree with you my Granddaughter loves it and if you walk the paths above it will tire them out and they will sleep at night

Charmouth is the go-to beach for fossil hunting, but, me and the little one found loads of fossils on the next beach along at Seatown which was a lot quieter :-)
