Presently in oz but we are thinking about returning to the UK at the end of the year for 2 months.

Now we need to get a car but car hire is coming in at around 1000 pounds.

So, what does the PH collective think the best (read economical) way is to get a car for 2 months?

Our thoughts so far are:

1. Rent a car (clio sized) for the 2 months = 1000 gbp.

or

2. Actually get FIL to buy a car from say PH classifieds or Auction before we arrive in UK for 1000 gbp or under that has 3-4 months MOT and Tax on it and then get him to sell after we leave. He knows his beans so happy to take this option.

The other thing is that we both have full NCD from the UK from last year which expires after 2 years lack of use in Feb 2009. Therefore if we re-insure before Feb 2009 it keeps it going. Insurance should only be 60 quid for the 2 months.

Then when it sold we might actually get say 800 quid back and its therefore only would only cost maybe max 500 quid with a bit of depreciation and if we have to stick some tax on.

As you can see Option 2 is by far the more fun but potentially more hassle.

Anyone have any thoughts on this or any other views/ideas?

Cheers for the response.

Sorry to bump it, but anyone have any other comments?

Any other advice?

I was thinking that if i do end up buying one i might do a mini PH Blog on the whole start to finish experience, costs etc. I'm still wondering if i can do it all for precisely zero cost and maybe even make a profit!

This company are quoting Vauxhall Corsas for £269 per 28 day period, therefore around £500 for 2 months. I wouldn't bother with the hassle of buying an old banger which will cost you tax, insurance etc when for £500 you can get a new car that won't break down and if it does you'll also have recovery service:

Was thinking about posting a similar thing.

Except I'm 23 and have no UK car insurance. Guessing rental is the best way to go unless a company will insure me at an affordable price?

Depends on how much money you have available.

Rather than <£1000 on buying a car, you may well get a better return spending more like £1500-£2000 on something a bit better.

Would be potentially more readily saleable at the end of the 2 months.

Thanks for that. I had a look but after VAT its actually 632 pounds with a mileage limit. Good option but slightly unsure. Thanks for that though.

good point there and certainly agree. It would also make for a nicer car to use for 2 months. such as: http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/427208.htm (used to have one - loved it)

However cash flow may out on this one. Its already costing $6800 for flights, which kind of creams us a bit.

Me and the FIL have bought cars at auction before so i sensed the potential for profit - but also a tad amount of hassle.

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep em coming....

£1,000 for two months is very reasonable

A half-decent car loan of £15,000 will cost you that every month for three years and you'll lose it in depreciation ...

You'd be spending £500 a month on public transport!

Wait until you find a good sub/circa £1000 MX-5, insure it using classic insurance (although that won't help retain your NCD, so may be more applicable to Colonial), enjoy a reliable and fun summer of motoring, sell it on and potentially turn a profit.

MX-5 - the answer to every PHers woes.

Hmmm. That makes remarkably good sense really.

pffft, don't care about you, I'm talking about for me in my nice subtle thread hijack.

Perhaps a metal luggage tray as Morgan does would be the best way forward? Some occy straps and you are set.

If you rent from one of the usual places then you should be ok. I'd imagine if you tried getting private insurance for a car you've bought, but aren't a UK citizen and are only on a travel visa then you'll be royally shafted!
