Call from Barclays
Discussion
I have got a call from barclays with a message to give them a cal lback on 0800 015 8601.
A couple of things things though i dont bank with them, and when call them back was asking for credit card details or debit card details.
Seemed a bit odd. Does anyone know if the above number is genuine?? As i banked with barclays 6/7 years ago, and i am wondering 1. how they got my work number and 2. of someone has nicked stolen my ID.

I thought that too.
I rang a number Barclaycard sent to me. When I rang they asked who I shared my card with (no-one...), what my limit was, what my card number was...
After ten minutes I thought it was a scam. Later they rang back to confirm that someone had stolen my identity. They got my card statements sent to them, a new card sent to them, my limit increased and emptied my card.
If in doubt, you can ask them to call you back, and/or confirm more of your details once they are satisfied you are you.

Its fine to call these numbers back, especially if they come via text as some banks will communicate that way. However, as soon as you do, ask what the nature of the call is and if they can tell without asking for your ID, its a scam! If they ask you to confirm ID, simply ask them for the HQ or regular call centre number, call that instead, confirming it to be correct from the banks statement or website and ask them to handle it. That way your are protected and any potential scam is flagged up early enough for the bank to try to do something about it.
The worrying thing about these types of scams is that for every one person that doesn't fall for it there would be at least 10 that have already fallen for it. Its a numbers games, if they don't get you they'll soon get someone else.
its worrying how easily people can get manipulated to this type of social engineering.

I made this point to BT about spam emails, if you read my long ranting posts about BT's appalling broadband service problem that my Dad had last weekend.
They genuinely need users to "verify" their email addresses, so they've been sending emails to tell users to click on a link and "verify" their details .
My Dad is 74, he does bleeding well to use the interweb anyway and I've trained him long and hard not to respond to phone calls like the OP had and not to respond to emails like that so why on earth do bona fide companies do it and then act surprised when folks think their emails are spam
It's like the ones that get stroppy when they ring me and ask me to confirm my ID to them...umm no, sorry, you confirm your ID to me and then perhaps I'll talk to you!
Sorry, ranting off topic

Just a quick heads up on this old thread but this might help someone. That 0800 number is indeed a Barclays genuine number. Their fraud guys are right on the ball, called me today, offered that number. I called another number I have and double checked it, they confirmed. Some git had been trying to clean me out.
