A new thread for a new year.

Targas continue to be popular with new ones being hosted and planned.

Hopefully night events won't lose out. There have been low entries and cancellations for more than a few over 2023.
Hopefully they will recover in 2024.

Basingstoke Motor club will be holding navigator training sessions and practice 12-Cars in January and February.

Training will be on the 1st Wednesday of the months, with the actual events on the 3rd Wednesday.

12-Car rallies are navigational events where the navigator and driver work as a team to plot and drive the route in the correct time limit.

Any car can be used as long as it has plain bodywork (no stickers / advertising etc).
Insurance for the event can be arranged for a small fee.

The events will be around 30 miles long (60 minutes). An ideal length to get around and back to the start venue for debrief and drinks etc.

They will be open to anyone who wishes to come along. They can supply drivers and pottis etc.

Both will be on OS map 185 (Dash4it are sensibly priced)

The relaxation of rules for diesel cars will change things about somewhat.

Lets hope it works out.

I was as a navigator
Was a great event, 12 cars, lots of marshals
All got around.

Picked up a puncture on 1st section which dropped us back and I made a few mistakes that cost us.

Looking forward to the next events. Is a very busy calendar.

Dolphin 12 car on 2nd for me as cannot do the Craven on the 29th

First 12 Car of the year for me last night.

A brilliantly run event by Toby and Andy of Sevenoaks and District Motor Club, their first as organisers.

Car troubles meant it wasn't great for us, first of all the power supply to the Poti (illuminated map magnifier) failed making plotting and navigation very hard for Chas the navigator, then the exhaust hangers disintegrated, necessitating a long halt to repair. This meant we had to cut a couple of sections to get to the final control before OTL, hence a barrowload of penalties. Still, we got a finish and weren't last! Onwards and Upwards!
Well done for getting to the finish.

Looking forwards to the Manston Targa.

Is a busy time for me, more events that I want to do than can.

However, Bath Festival is booked (Nav) and Bramley (Nav & Drive) as well as the Oxford 20/20 and sundry 12 cars.

Started my year with the last ever Bagger. Nearly a 250 mile route in the end! Had my best run as a nav after a couple of years of frustration. Found some good flow and finished 2nd in the novice class and 22nd overall out of 70 starters. Fog, ice, mud, gravel, it had it all. Still annoyed I missed one of the final control a which cost is 1st in class by about 4 minutes.

Then it’s Bath Festival after that which I am really looking forward to.
Well done on the Bagger, had planned to do it, but life got in the way.
Same with Taunton - too many events - not enough 'passes'

Bath Festival should be good, will be interesting to see how it changes to cope with the new rules (R21).

Does anyone here have an understanding of the Targa regs in regards to engine swaps.

My understanding is that there is nothing to prohibit an engine swap in a Targa car

- i.e. I could transplant a Honda S2000 engine into my Mk2 Escort and as long as I keep the standard induction, it can be road rally eligible.

Is that everyone else's understanding?
I believe that is correct.

Applicable MSUK Regulations (page 320):-
R18.2.4
R18.2.41
R18.3.1

Was a good event, got a decent finish with only a few dramas.

Good results from some of the first timers, heard a few comments about getting better cars for the future.

Course was laid out well, nothing too tight and keeping us from some of the nasty edges and potholes.

PaulV, saw you guys heading off with the car on the trailer while we were queuing up to start test 5 back at Castle Combe. What happened?
The newly fitted clutch started to slip on test 5.
Supposedly good for 220bhp, way over what the car has.

Alex was rather miffed to say the least.

A pity as we were quite good on pace (baulking notwithstanding)

Has anyone got experience of using a Focus ST170 for Targas? I’ve got the chance to get my dads one for free, needed only an inlet manifold and some tyres, and I’m immediately thinking it’d make a great Targa car for me to have some fun in.
I assume a sump guard is a necessity, anything else?
I haven't seen many around, have a look at:-

There shouldl be some nuggets of wisdom there.

I spoke to one of the organisers after the event.

He said that the code boards were designed to get people to stop as that was helping keep people away from bogey times.

It seemed to work okay however as some have stated, they could easily be misread if you rushed it or got the angle wrong.

I was clear until test 9, then cocked up and transcribed two wrong onto the timecard. bangheadbangheadbanghead

Tyres did seem to be a problem for some, was easy to kill the set on the driving axle. Cheap and cheerful may be in order next time.

A well run event though, made good use of the land available and finished at a sensible time for the long run back to civilisation hehedriving
