hi guys, already posted this in the East Anglia region but this looks a better spot...

i recently sold my TDi passat to get something a bit more fun wink

the story goes the same as most of us when my first child was born i did what i said i would never do... i broke up and sold my MK3 Astra fitted with a cavalier turbo C20LET engine weeping
With the money from that i bought a cheap Astra estate and this was swapped for the Passat diesel shortly after as i wanted a comfy, modern and more reliable car for a while getmecoat

Fast forward a year and i just couldn't bare driving a diesel any more, my wallet loved the 50mpg cruising but it was doing nothing for my petrol head MOJO. I knew what i had to do so the Passat was put up for sale, here's how it was when it went....

the replacement had to be an estate to do the same job and please the missus but this time it had to be a big power petrol to replace what ive been missing out on since the C20LET left driving

after researching and looking at a few different cars i decided on a C5 shape (1999-2004) Audi S6 Avant. With a 4.2ltr V8, 344bhp and 4WD it fitted the bill perfectly so i set about finding a good one, after looking at a few and being messed about by the sellers of a few others i found the perfect one for me and went to get it on sunday biggrin

its a 51 plate, 89K on the clock with FSH, enthusiast owned and very well looked after so apart from that ill let the picture do the talking cool

20 inch RS4 style wheels and brand new tires

trademark S/RS chrome mirrors yes

lovely interior with black leather heated Recaros, black alcantara pillers and head lining, real carbon fiber trims, and tiptronic steering wheel

the car has loads of options including like xenon lights, front and rear parking sensors, tinted windows and also these built in rear sun blinds which were a must with one child and one on the way sperm....

it even already has the hardware for the rare 7 seat option (although the bench wasn't with it)....

and the even rarer option of a fully working DIS (a common fault on this vintage of VAG cars) biglaugh

lastly the beast of an engine under the bonnet cool

which is VERY loud due to a previous owner removing both rear silencers laugh

strait away i couldn't resist taking it over to the airfield and stretching its legs so here's a few vids to show just how loud it is laugh

so what do you guys think??

Cheers for the input. i love the car to bits, its just what i wanted/needed

I already ordered an RNS-E (Audi built in sat nav) with audi bluetooth module as thats all i really miss from the passat

I've also ordered a replacement S6 badge to go back on the boot although im going to leave the Audi rings off for now.

as for the exhaust, ive already spoken to a mate of mine whos garage does custom exhaust fabrication. Hes going to add a couple of small silencers back into the system to make it a bit more sociable (also because i don't think the dogs like being in the boot with that noise right under them rofl). At the same time he is going to add some bigger tail pipes, nothing OTT but enough to fill the bumper cut outs a bit better.

cheers for that Dr G, you are (as i have also seen else where) a genuine Audi genius bow

i did have an inkling they were reps as the tires didn't seem wide enough to me, but i believed they were genuine because they have more of a concave look than replicas ive seen in the past. You've just confirmed it without me having to go get my hands dirty and take off to look at the inside so thankyou. smile

still love the wheels though, just think it needs lowering a touch to set them off.

There isn't a record of the cambelt being done and its also due a service hense why it was priced so cheap compared to other ones for sale at the moment. Apart from that the service history is good so I'm not worried about the condition of the engine etc... The only thing I've spotted is when I took the covers off of the engine to clean them I noticed both manifold air flap linkages are snapped (a common fault) so they need doing too.

ill do it myself as I'm an aircraft mechanic by trade and it doesn't worry me. Even if the auto box decides to pop in future ill probably just buy a donor manual 4.2 and convert this wink

new update...

got my genuine Audi OEM built in sat nav and bluetooth through the post so set about fitting it biggrin

new kit waiting to go in...

old radio

and fitted cool

and with a little bit of VAG-COM coding it has full communication with the car and drivers info display clap

yes the trim colour is slightly lighter than the climate control module below but when that gets replaced anyway due to the worn buttons ill get the post 2002 version which is lighter

very happy with it, built in sat nav and Bluetooth hands free was the only thing i knew id miss from the Passat and now this has it. pretty bang up to date for a 2001 car hehe

That exhaust noise is horrible! It was quite a good car before, why ruin it by making it sound like a boy racer's Corsa? confused

That does look lovely. May I ask how much you paid for it?....
Not at all, it cost me £3,995 and is a WHOLE lot of car for the money IMO. When i was shopping around, all the other examples at similar mileage/condition were around 7-8K and to get others at the same price they were all either very tatty, low spec or had been to the moon and back miles wise.

on a side note its now badged back up and the chav plate is gone smile

its all your fault ive spent the afternoon looking at these and getting rather to good insurance quotes! Whats the real world MPG?
laugh

Day to day it averages 15mpg and on a run last week I've seen 20mpg but I'm not expecting any more than that TBH.

It doesn't bother me as I'm in the army and my quarter is only just outside the base. I cycle to work during the week which saves a lot of fuel.

Do not underestimate the cars drinking problem though. When I first got it and took it onto the base to take the videos on the first page, I checked the trip computer on the way home and it was a 8.6mpg eek

Now that I am back from Afghanistan its time to bump this thread biggrin

First thing, first. When I got back the car was sent strait to my mate's garage to have two silencers put back into the exhaust.

Along with the silencers he changed the tips for a slightly larger set to fill the bumper cutouts better which I like.

Before:

Now:

The car sounds so much nicer now. The popping and banging has gone, there is no droning at cruise anymore, but there is still a nice V8 rumble at idle and at the top end of the rev range she still sings well smile

Cheers guys, it's Good to be back.

Bought plenty of goodies for the car while I've been away so updates will be frequent smile

The latest of which just arrived in the post this morning, Porsche Cayenne turbo front Brembo calipers to go with the new discs I already have in the garage.

What discs are you going to run that will work with the Cayenne calipers? Also is it a custom set of brackets needed for the calipers?
Using 350mm Mercedes ML500 discs from models after 2006

The ML55 discs used to fit these calipers to other VAG cars wont work with the S6 because it has a different offset hubs to give the wider track.

I'm also using the smaller 17Z pads because the 18Z ones over hang the inner edge of the discs swept area.

No custom brackets needed as the mounting hole spacing is the same. It just needs some bushes made or shouldered bolts as the holes are a larger diameter than the S6 uses.

Recently released I haven't updated this in AGES.

Shortly after my last post my second son was born. Since then I've been tinkering with the Audi as and when I get the chance.

DVD player and screens have been fitted.

Front grill was getting tatty so has been painted black.

PH Smiley fitted. Excuse the dodgy photo effect, it looked better on my phone paperbag)

Finally (and my favorite), the Cayenne front brakes have been fitted after being painted in the traditional Audi black with some custom made "S6" decals. really pleased with the way they came out.

Cheers guys.

Shes been looking sorry for herself lately so today I cracked out the snow foam and gave her a proper wash.

Much better. Hard to tell but you might be able to spot the latest modification. Removal of the drug dealer tints. smile

I also went out and did a new quick video of the new exhaust. The engine is warm but she's been sat on the drive for a while, hence the steam.

Not to highjack your thread but after having a cheeky look for one online biggrin I decided to check out their stats and noticed (on paper/parkers) that they only do 0-60 in 6.6 despite the 335bhp on tap, I know the weight is 1800kg something but that seems a little slow, seems pointless chopping in the 330i for that if its such a minor gain, unless its much faster than the book says?
No worries.

You're right, it is a bit slower than its BHP figure might otherwise suggest. The weight of the avant doesn't help and the fact that it has an old school Torque converter auto and 4wd saps some of the power before it gets to the road.

Personally though I think (as with most cars) 0-60 is a bad stick to measure it against. The auto box only has 5 gears which are very long to take it up to the 155mph limiter. Where it shines is the in gear torque; I never have a problem overtaking in the S6 smile
