Hi there,

I'm a proud new owner of a used Golf SE 1.4 TSI (122ps) however I have a few questions. It was bought used from a main dealer just over a week ago. It's a 10 plate with about 25,000 miles on the clock.

1) On the motorway cruising at 75mph (indicated) continuously for about 100miles I only seem to be able to max out the mpg at 35. This was with a tank of Shell V-Power. I've now filled the car with normal unleaded, and have the same journey in reverse on Thursday so will see if there's any difference, but bearing in mind that I think myself to be quite an economical driver (shift up before 3000rpm which is what the car usually suggests) and no quick acceleration in 5th or 6th, could there be something else wrong?

2) I have a feeling the front offside tyre has a slow puncture. I think it may be a very slow puncture. I made it from London to Exeter and then I noticed the tyre was a bit short on air (about 20PSI rather than 29PSI) so filled it up. I then drove between Exeter and Bristol a few times before it showed any signs of losing pressure. Is this something the dealer should look at/sort out?

3) I'm quite interested in getting the RNS-510 installed. I know of vwcruise however are there any others I might consider (except main dealers unless you know one that doesn't charge an extortionate amount)?

4) I've done a search, but I seem to be no use. Are there any good guides on the forum for beginners about cleaning their nice new cars? I've heard of the 2 buck method etc, and also claying but not entirely sure what to do.

5) Finally, is a multi function steering wheel worth it? Always fancied one, but obviously buying used there was a limit to how I could spec the car. What are your thoughts?

Cheers

Thank you.

I note that some Golf Mk6 variants have a little shark fin antenna on the back which my car doesn't. Is that purely for DAB or would I need that for navigation?

I'm going to give a motorway journey at 65mph a try. Supposedly I should get MPG. See what happens.

Anywhere reputable (except the bay) where I might be able to get a RNS-510?

Next question. Excuse the l33t paint skills, but I found some wear in the paint that was originally unnoticed. I'll try get a pic tomorrow, but for the time being where I'm looking is just below the black arrow where it changes panels. The edge of the panel with the arrow on is predominantly white, as if it's been scratched, but I'm unsure as to how it could have been scratched there?!

Could the front bumper have been replaced due to an incident? Is the dealer obliged to tell me?

Listen out for any rattles on start-up. If it rattles, and is progressively getting worse, you'll need the timing chain sprockets & tensioner replaced. Mine needed this done at 37000 miles. I was a bit annoyed, having bought a petrol car that sounded worse than a diesel for the first few seconds!
Think you've worried me now. Had a listen to the car starting (as I've never actually listened from the outside) and I can hear a clicking for the first 5/10 seconds. I'll try record the noise and upload it.

Also, I'll get a picture of the white scuff. Is it possible that it is the wax/polish collecting on the corners? It seems to have happened on a few other places and I managed to wipe a bit of it off, but not much. Hmmm.

And how do I find that bit of information out?

Does a car registered in April 2010 mean it is "my2010"?

Ok perfect. It is an A so I have a MY2010 model. Therefore, on my 6-speed 1.4 TSI engine I should have hill-start assist?

Also, yet another question (ps. thanks so much for the help so far!!).

I've already driven over 750miles since getting the car 3 weeks ago. My service code is QG1 and the last (and only) service was at 16000 miles. It's at 30,000 miles now. Should I be thinking about oil change etc...?

A highline DIS is something I don't have. Want to get one installed though, although I've heard the whole instrument cluster needs to be changed. redface

Is the hill start assist something that can be enabled with a VAGcom? (Similar to the tyre pressure warning system)

And also, does anyone have experience with:

VW warranties. Wondering if I should get one or not? (2010 car with 30,000 miles on the clock)

VW servicing plans. Are they worth it?

Another reply from me.

Took the car to a garage. Tyre fixed for £15 - all good.

Now, I pointed out the scratch on the edge of the panel and the guy reckons it's ben resprayed. Surely when buying a used car from a main dealer this is something they should point out? I feel a bit let down by the dealer who claimed it was accident free and the only problems with the paint work were the small dents probably from someone else's door (or something like that). How should I approach the dealer? Furthermore, could this explain a knocking sound I can hear around the B-pillar?

Cheers
