Out of interest is it legal to use these in france? I know that camera detectors are banned, but would they check your tomtom to see if it had alerts turned on and the confiscate it?

I asked a similar question on SELOC a while ago before I bought a SatNav. Got a reply from a chap in France - SatNavs with camera locations are legal, in fact I believe they publish camera locations.

Interestingly in Germany they can confiscate SatNavs with German camera locations - this theoretically means they could take your car if the system is built-in...

Is there a great advantage to this? As far as I know there is no cross border agreement in place for penalties (not yet at least, although I know it is planned). So if you get zapped by a camera nothing can really happen surely. Getting pulled by les flics is one thing as you get carted straight to the cashpoint (or worse depending on speed :hehe), but with cameras you will likely be well out of the country before the process kicks in.

More importantly it does show the mobile locations, which will involve beer money being wasted if caught.

I wouldnt want to have to argue the toss with a non English speaking Gendarme at the road side trying to tell him that the TomTom was in fact legal and NO, you cant confiscate it. In my experience the French police are over zealous on camera detectors, been reports of searching cars that they suspect may have a detector hidden away, even tho not able to be used ie/ in the boot.
I got pulled because i had the empty geodosy cradle on my dash. He was v insistant that i handed the detctor over, all i could do was keep saying it was at home. After giving the car a good look over he shruged and rode off. The unit was hidden in the boot.
B45trd waited 5km up the road and then pulled us for crossing a solid white line. Just determined to get us for something.
So, BE CAREFUL OUT THERE PEOPLE !!

That said i got pulled for speeding last year (fair cop) and Gendarme couldnt have been nicer. V apologetic as he releived me of 90 out of my last 100 euros. Doing 105mph on peage.

There are only 3 all the way down I think. One coming off the ferry, one at the entrance to the Rouen tunnel and one on the A28 where the road narrows and crossed the viaduct bridges.

It's the hidden flic you need to worry about!

The TomTom was giving loads of mobile position warnings last year but only saw a couple of traps.

I have just asked Tom Tom and this is their reply

A radar detector is a device for detecting whether the police are tracking your speed using a radar. The TomTom software does not do this, it has a database of speed cameras stored on the device and simply warns you when you are approaching one.

As mentioned, this software is only illegal to use in Switzerland.

ergo:- Radar detectors illegal, tomtom software legal in Europse except Switzerland
