Apologies as I guess this may have been done to death but the PH search facility is yet again, under maintenance

We (me,46 fit and healthy; Mrs O, 48 with MS and asthma; and 15yo son, asthma)are off to Kalkan in Turkey in July. We plan to visit touristy places (and not go near the Syrian border hehe )

Any jabs required or advised?

cheers

None, we went to Kalkan - lovely villa, and came back alive and well!

Are you going to Paul and Lucy's place?

He is the very helpful chap on here and a good egg to boot.

Villa Yar was perfect for us, quiet and private, but close enough to the town should we need it. In reality we didn't venture far because it was so nice - and definitely going back some time.

Have you been to Turkey before? One of my favourite places, if you get the chance go down to Kaz, do it early in the morning and have breakfast buy the quay - it's lovely.

I'v not been before but my wife lived there for a short period with her first husband. That was up in the Istanbul though. She doesnt know the bit we are going to so thats a result for both of us.

Seriously, thanks for that advice. I will start to plan a few trips out soon so any input like that is appreciated.

What restaurants would you recommend in Kalkan?

Well, actually, we enjoyed the villa so much we tended to eat there all the time. It has a great kitchen and a good BBQ area and it seemed a shame to waste it.
So I can recommend you a good butcher and Vegitablist if you need biglaugh
There are a few threads on here specifically about Kalkan, a Google search will probably give you some hits. Just did one myself and your original thread came up - but there are a few listed.

As for breakfast we only did it once as we got a really early flight and couldn't get in to the villa til after lunch.

Struggled to find a bad restaurant in Kalkan! Food was excellent. The fish terrace was nice with live music.

There is only 1 small roundabout at the bottom of town, slight hill, from the roundabout walk up the hill and butcher is on your right after a couple of hundred yards, and if there are girls eating with you, green and yellow stuff can be found a little further along the same side - think it might even be called Tesko or similar.

There is no way you need hep b or rabies. Hep b I simply recommended for healthcare providers or people with risky sexual activities. Rabies is only needed in remote areas, as it buys you time to get medical help rather than preventing it.

I would update tetanus/polio as always beneficial. I'd discuss further typhoid and hep a

Villa yar is an amazing place to stay. We had a week there last year. Perfect views and very romantic (especially if you are a couple by yourselves!). One gripe is that it wont be suitable for serious sun worshippers as the sun doesn't actually flood the terrace (or the villa) with sun for the most part of the day. We were there in October and the sun was rattling around the 30 degree mark for most of the time. It didn't, however, shine so much on the pool or seating areas around the pool. We were constantly having to move the sunbeds out of the shaded areas but there was no sun on the terrace by about 2.30 - 3 pm; the rest of the day sees sun on approx 20 - 30% of the terrace and no more. In the afternoon the rooftop terrace was pretty much the only place in the villa with any measure of sunshine on it.

It's not a deal breaker as there is always the beach but when Villa Yar is so private it seems a shame to have to lay on stony beaches to get some sun. Finally, no jabs are required and be careful (at Villa Yar) of people just indiscriminately wandering up the stairs to see you. They don't ring the bell so you need to either lock the door (if your wife likes to bath topless for instance) or accept that you may get an unexpected visitor once in a while.

The sun issue was probably due to time of year, we were there in August and no such issues, there was always sun aplenty.
The roof top was lovely indeed - but again, in August, unbearable after about 0830 smile

The visitor was a bit of a surprise to us too the first time, but we got chatting and he gave us an indication of his visit times so we worked around that, but I take your point.

As a slight aside - was the villa in front and to the left finished when you were there? I had a nose round when it was just the concrete shell and it looked like it could be a very nice place, was going to investigate a little further but the agent couldn't get there during our stay, and then when you get home other st takes over.

Hi Graham, all the restaurants are pretty good, try the Baharat restaurant in the main street, Salt & Pepper restaurant in the harbour is nice. As is Aubergine restaurant, again in the main street. I doubt you will have a bad meal anywhere there as we go every other year. All the restaurants offer a wide selection to cater to all tastes and the roof top dining set up that most have is simply the best. Finally try the Café Del Mar coffer shop just off the harbour, its a great little place to sit and watch the world go by and they do wine etc as well.

Hi Guys!
Thanks so much for all the positive comments, really appreciated Mark et al. We really try our best to please everyone (which can be testing at times) and put a great deal of personal time into trying to get it right. Last year we had comments that there was too much sun and could we get more parasols? so we did. I agree and take on board that late October the sun only stays till 4pm by the pool and yes you may have to move your sun loungers to get that (careful not to knock your GandT over!) so late sun is best on the beach which is 100m down the hill if you go later in the year. Its also good to note that we do get bookings due to the location especially as the villa does not get direct sun into the main living areas only on the pool which frankly can be unbearable and heat the villa to an oven as some suffer from. I guess all places have their pros and cons. Our main reason for purchase was the privacy it gets and its not cheek and jowel as some places are. We think the night time views are exceptional too as the lights of Kalkan over the water are beautiful as opposed to looking out over a dark sea.

Agree with the unexpected pool cleaner visits. We pulled them up on it. They now water the plants and clean the pool at 8am and 6pm at night only so feel free to skinny dip inbetween these hours. :-)

Re your question on the villa below to the left yes its now finished and on the market for £550,000 if you are feeling flush! or can be rented as part of a package at approx £1000 per person with flights. Its owned by a local accountant I think.

Lucy and I are off for a week this month to get bills paid so we can update anyone with any specific Kalkan Q's. The villa this year again is doing well although its Pheader empty which is a shame. Any last minute Pheaders are welcome too, its there to be used.

Thanks
Paul

Not quite that flush! I imagine is very lovely though.

Is the pool cleaner still the same chap? Really nice guy and good for a chat and a little inside knowledge of the local area, turns out we visited the village he grew up in while there.

Regards to Lucy smile

Is the Turkish villa available from a Thur to Thur in the last two weeks of the school holidays as that is the only flight from Cardiff to Dalaman and is that near or far?
