... which would you choose?

Honda Crosstourer 1200
Triumph Explorer 1200
Triumph Tiger 1050
XT1200Z Super Tenere Touring
Versys 1000 Grand Tourer
R 1200 GS

I'm just having a pipe dream afternoon at the moment! Really want one of these 'adventure' style bikes, they've got my name written all over them!

At the moment my favourite seems to be the Explorer but the Super Tenere has a strange appeal.....

You missed the two most performant adventure style bikes:

Ducati Multistrada 1200
KTM 1190 Adv

The top of the line Ducati GT is just too damn expensive!!

And the KTM comes in two colours - horrible or more horrible!!

Having had the tiger for a day when my speed triple was in for a service I found the experance to be very good.

triple Engine very good, Seat was like a sofa compaired to my speed triple and blade I have now

if that is the style of bike you are after then it's a excellent bike

Can't comment on the rest as I have only read about them and not test rode or ridden them

Depends what styles of bike you want, why not organise some test rides?

I rode a CBR600 until I test rode a GS. 2 weeks later, I was back giving them my CBR in part-ex for a brand new GS.

I can't wait until I get another one next year. GS all the way for me, they are fantastic machines.

Dunno about the Honda-probably quite swish & Honda-like smile

Tiger Sport does get v.good write-ups.

Multistrada -dear & not miraculous?

Super Tenere is supposed to be capable but IIRC they're bloody pricey too ?

How important is off tarmac ability?

A mate had a Super Ten and hated, sold it for a Triumph Explorer and absolutely loves it. On the other hand another mate has a Super Ten and loves it. Both previously owned TDMs so it's not like they had significantly different tastes.

The Multistrada is expensive if you go for the top of the line one, but the basic mode is about 2/3 the price, and the main difference is it has manualyl adustable Marzocchi suspension instead of the electrically adjustable Ohlins.

Off tarmac capability not important.

I like to do mile crunching in Europe off of the beaten track, but not off of the tarmac too much smile

I'd want it to be fully loaded - and you seem to be able to get everything for around £12-13k apart from the Ducati.

A few quick searches on Biketrader:

Triumph Explorer £11k (12 reg, 500 miles, full Triumph luggage, fog lights, etc.)
Super Tenere £13k (13 reg, 0 miles, full Yamaha luggage etc.)
Versys £9.5k (13 reg, 0 miles, full GIVI hard luggage, engine bars, GIVI screen)
Crosstourer £12.5k (12 reg, 1700 miles, full Honda luggage, etc.)
Triumph Tiger £8.4k (12 reg, 1800 miles, full Triumph luggage, etc.)
R1200GS £13.5k (12 reg, 1300 miles, Full BMW luggage, etc.)
Ducati £16.8k (13 reg, 0 miles, absolutely loaded)

The Versys looks an absolute bargain to be fair and gets very good write ups.....

If I couldn't have the KTM then I think the Super Tenere would be my choice. Nick Sanders seems to be liking his

If it doesn't need to leave Tarmac, then a K1600GTL

If too much money then touring don't come any more resilient than on a R1200RT

Unfortunately they just aren't my style - maybe when I'm older!

I also forgot to mention that I'd use it for the semi-frequent jaunt into London for work (1.5 hours each way) so it needs to be handy in traffic and town.

You'll get a Super Tenere for much less than that.

That'd be the bike I'd go for. I preferred it to the 1200GS personally.

Haha! Never thought I'd be on a BMW. Then the S1000RR happened. Then, I found myself doing 1,000 miles a week in my M3 which was costing a fortune and all of a sudden an RT came into sharp focus. Bought a 6 year old one and i have to say, to my annoyance, the thing ghas got under my skin. The engine has no place on a motorcycle, let alone a BMW badge, but you forgive the wobbling collection of reciprocating alloys as the handling and comfort are so good! It goes where you look and you can keep a good speed up with screen and the confidence in the chassis. plus it will do 275 miles on a tank. So Oxford - Edinburgh is one 10 minute stop for fuel and you're there in four and a half hours. I have put 20K miles on the thing since buying it and if I was wanting to cross Europe, this bike would be my choice. More capable on tarmac than any of the bikes you list. Sure, if you want a bit of desert, river bed, pampas crossing, then the GS / Super Tenere/ KTM Adventure would be better smile

You're right!

I do like the idea of shaft drive as well, so it puts me off the Tiger and the Versys.

I think you need to buy a copy of this months Motorcyle, Pipe & Slippers mag (aka Motorcycle, Sport & Leisure) as there is a group test of the above in it.

I can see what you're saying, I really can, but I just don't think I could ride one of those - yet.

I want to look semi-cool with my worn biking jeans and dark visor hopping off of something that looks like I've just ridden from the equator! Even if I have only ridden from Sussex to London laugh
