Up to 600 Afghan interpreters who worked alongside British troops are to be given the right to live in the UK, government sources have confirmed.
The plan marks a climbdown from ministers who had decided they should not get the same UK resettlement rights as interpreters in the Iraq conflict.
Afghan interpreters who worked on the front line for a year or more will initially be offered a five-year visa.
The move covers about half of Afghan interpreters who helped the UK.
What could possibly go wrong?!?!The plan marks a climbdown from ministers who had decided they should not get the same UK resettlement rights as interpreters in the Iraq conflict.

Presumably they did it for the money and now that the Taliban are coming straight back in, they've backed the wrong horse and have to get out.
Glad to see they're getting support because they'd (like many other Afghans who helped UK forces) be in trouble once the Taliban take over again.

For once, I welcome them with open arms. They put their lives on the line for the UK.
Perhaps we can send 600 lazy British losers out to Afghanistan when the plane heads back. Seems a fair swap to me.

why are w so keen to help people within this country who have never contributed, but so wary of helping those people who make a genuine contribution to our country at their own risk?

I guess I'm just surprised at the ease this has been agreed given how hard the Ghurkas had to fight for the same thing? If that makes sense?
The Gurkhas are at no risk in their own country. But they still should be allowed to settle here IMHO.If only there were an appropriate exit mechanism for those who do feck all for our country, born here or not.

They'll probably apply to become minicab drivers and make my working life even more difficult BBC said:

Joking aside, I'm glad they'll have a safe place to live.
