Chris Harris video: Ford Fiesta ST

Affordable, fast and fun - is the Fiesta ST the new wave hot hatch hero? Harris investigates

Part two of 2013's hot hatch revival begins here with the new Fiesta ST. You've all read about the car already - know that it undercuts the Clio RS on price and on power, but it offers more torque and a manual gearshift.

We'll run a head to head with the Clio later in the summer, so for now any decisions between the two on my part are conjecture. We drove the car mainly on the road, because that's where the majority of users will do so. But I wanted to know how the car behaves when you provoke it, so we did some action shots at a track too.

There's only one area of the car's performance that I find a bit confusing, and it's not one you'd normally associate with a hot hatch: low speed ride. Maybe I'm just getting old, but at times I found the Fiesta very crashy at low speed. Why do so-called 'sporty' cars have to do this? It's unnecessary and spoils the experience.

As for the rest of the car, watch the vid to find out.

Enjoy the vid.

Good review.

It seems to be exactly what an ST should be.

I like everything about it really.

I just hope the RS arrives and doesn't look as stupidly chavvy and OTT as the current Focus RS does, and that it basically has the 2.0 4 pot from the current Focus ST... now that would be something very interesting biggrin

Still confused what all this torque nonsense is about. If you didn't know what figure of torque the car made you'd never guess from driving a car unless you could do some very good brain-maths while timing intervals.

Why always talk about torque? Why not just say low-end power because then it makes sense. Hey ho.

Still find the monologue audio muddy though. That bit at the end when he talked about ESP is almost illegible. Does the guy editing these actually listen to the videos afterwards? The in-car audio on the other hand is great. Why such a difference?!

Interesting enough for me to go and visit the Ford website.... Unfortunately there is no configurator, just and pdf brochure.

How do these huge global motor companies attract customers with these poor websites?!?!

So... Chris said everything there at least twice.

Not much to say then?

I drove one of these at the weekend, and ordered one on Monday.

From my limited experience in one this seems a fair review.

I wish I hadn't read your comment before watching - that's all I noticed! Everything. Twice.

Please do the Clio comparison - it got mentioned far too much without knowing the outcome.

Tidy car though.

Not watched the vid yet, but I love these & i enjoy reading the group test in autocar where it won it! I do have a soft spot for the blue oval.

Drove one last week and was left very impressed. Walked all over my R56 Cooper S that's for sure. But over my 8 month old Metal? I'm not too sure.

The one I spec'd was the basic car with only the dark wheel option, and nothing else (solid paint, cloth seats), because that's how I think this car works. With discounts, I managed to get the dealer down to a round of drinks over £16k, which is great VFM, but it's going to cost £5k more than my 62 plate Fiesta Metal (slightly warmer version of the previous gen Zetec-S).

For me, the cost is too great, as for me the Metal does 90% of what the ST can (it lacks the power, braking performance and the 6th gear), but for £5k, I will wait for the warranty to expire and let Mountune/Pumaspeed work their magic smile

After mine was run in, I took it on track and was stunned how the thing behaved. The only negatives of the day however were those that are now addressed in the ST, so maybe I should pull the trigger and be done with it...

Having watched the vid, I'm not 100% sure - did Chris actually mention that he likes the fact the ST has a manual gearbox? hehe

Another good review for the ST there, confident the clio will not come out the winner looking at all the other reviews recently comparing the clio, the ST and the new pug gti.

Still loving mine smile

A basic interior?! Too many luxury cars hehe

Looks like a freaking palace in there compared to my 172.

Decent video, but it seemed like it was part of a larger group test. Also, no mention at all of the 208 GTI, why's that?

Aren't Mountune's mods Ford-approved and, therefore, don't affect the warranty? confused

Yeah mountune stuff doesnt void warranty its approved by Ford themselves.

Id sell your Fiesta Metal while its still worth something, very costly to tune that 1.6 zetec lump plus you will only want an ST everytime you see one.
