Hi Guys,

I have a new desire to have an ultrabook after the laptop packed in.
Have been reading quite a few reviews but can't seem to narrow it down.

Predominantly will be used for web browsing, office, email, watching movies and lsitening to music, but don't game at all.

I would like at least an i5 and SSD card. Please recommend something.

Budget - £700 Max

Thanks

Go for it, as long as it helps you spell properly tongue out

I was in this position the other day. I had no real budget worry (business was paying) but I wanted it to be well made, good enough for work (programming & photoshop) and potentially good enough for games. Battery life should be 'an evening' so 4hours+

I went to a few shops and tried a few.. most ultrabooks/laptops I tried had st trackpads, st keyboards or bad screens with terrible off-angle colour weirdness.

I settled on a macbook pro retina. I don't think there is anything that comes close at the moment. Plus, windows 8 was horrid to use.

^^ I have to disagree with that, I think windows 8 is great, it just takes a bit of time to get used to it. Even though I have an iPad Rentina Display model I don't think I would want the IOS or hardware from a macbook to be my main computer.

I have heard you can run Parallels software on it to run Win8 and IOS too however paying 1300 a macbook air is too much: in my opinion of course, there is certainly better build quality/spec to be had at lower cost.

Dell XPS 13 at around £800? I remain very disappointed at the quality of most ultrabooks; only Dell and Lenovo's X1 Carbon (expensive) seem to be getting anywhere close to MacBook Air for a quality feel

Another vote for Dell XPS 13

The ASUS Zenbook is rather nice too

the Dell XPS 13 can be had at quite a highs pec out of the outlet store (refurbished) for around 540 pounds however I am sure I have seen some comments surrounding over heating of the device however I am not sure how bad this is...

Lovely looking ultrabook with a great screen. Zenbook is nice hwoever as far as I can see there is no SSD in the spec hence a no no for me personally.

Don't fall into the trap many people fall into which is:
1) Set a budget for a mid-range computer
2) Decide that the quality of these computers is not what they want
3) Increase their budget to buy a Mac because the quality is better

If you increase your budget, you open up other alternatives that you will have initially dismissed.

I went with a Lenovo X1 Carbon because I decided I couldn't live without the numerous dedicated keys Apple decide not to give you. I assume this is for aesthetic reasons.

looks a good deal? only windows 7 though. Should that be a major factor in choosing?

If you're going to run Windows and want to keep it for a while make sure it's touch-screen. At some time you're going to have to start using Windows 8!

I seen this posted on HOTUKDEALS tongue out

Excellent value for money - but I read the comments earlier this week and there seems to be a lot of discussion around the quality of the display which puts me off as I am so used to HD channels/Ipad retina display.

A lot of the times when I look at the wifes ipad mini its like looking at a blur - it genuinely looks that bad to me - I can't look at it for too long. I would like to see the ultrabook on display to see the quality.

All in all though a great product and good value for money.

I picked up a used (3 months) Dell XPS14 recently for £600. Beautiful machine, runs great and I think Windows 8 works great with a good touchpad and fast processor. I was looking at the XPS13 and was all set to get one when the higher specced 14 became available. Build quality seems fantastic, make sure you get one with an SSD though, not an SSD hybrid drive

My wife went through 3 13" XPS laptops before realizing they are super fragile. She's had her Air since launch and it's been faultless.

I use a windows PC daily, so I'm no fanboy, but they are the leaders of the laptop market at the moment.
