So, we have...

GT1
996 GT3 MK I & II & RS versions
996 GT2
996 Turbo & Turbo S
997 GT3 Gen I & II & RS versions
997 Turbo Gen I only.
997 GT2 & GT2 RS

Is that it? If so, it can be summarised by:-
GT1, All GT3's, All GT2's and all Turbos up to and including 997 Gen1.

Which (I think) means there is no Porsche that marries the Metzger engine with the PDK gearbox.

Guys the basic Mezger engine goes way further back, wasn't the original flat 6 the Mezger design ? The bottom end of the 997.1 turbo is very similar to the orginal 930 of 1977 isn't it ?

Up until recently GT3 crank cases had a 964 part number !

If you buy a set of Carrillo rods for your 997 GT2 or GT2 RS they will sell you the exact same ones which fit the 993 turbo !

The 993 turbo was the last air cooled turbo Mezger then the 996 turbo got bang up to date with the water cooled heads and proper head gaskets with the variable cam mechanism, but the bottom end and cylinders were the same I think ?

My understanding was that Mezger has designed many engines including the early 911s and of course the GT1 engine.

What I don't understand is how the 996 GT3 has a 964 crank case which is surely older than the 911 GT1's crank case?!

I dunno, but it is true, having spent time under a Swedish Mk1 at Ring Racing near the Ring, while it had a bent rear lower arm replaced. We had a chuckle at the 964 part number on the crank case...

There was a discussion about this some time ago. Pretty much every engine since the 1960's is a Mezger engine. Today people refer to engines derived from the GT1 engine as the Mezger engine but MTR saw this which I thought I'd repost - hope he doesn't mind!

Found this;

Hans Mezger joined Porsche in 1956 and within a few years was responsible for the design of both the early 1960s F1 engine and subsequently led the design of the six cylinder 911 engine. In 1965 he became head of the new race design office under the charismatic Ferdinand Piëch. Mezger led the development of all the iconic race prototypes of the 1960s, climaxing in the unforgettable 917 program. He was a principal contributor to all sixteen of Porsche’s victories in the famed Le Mans 24 Hours. When the McLaren-TAG F1 team came to Porsche for a turbo engine in the 1980s, he led the design and development that resulted in three consecutive F1 constructors’ titles.

So I guess, the term Mezger engine means any with a block that is an evolution of the original 2.0? The 993 would be the last air cooled one, then it was used again for the GT3/2/T.
