I guess this could also fit in ‘S, P & L’ subsection but let’s try here first.

I just wanted to ask anyone more familiar with the area, when the new average speed cameras went in between Newlands Corner and Silent Pool?

I drove through last week and noticed just one camera at the top of the hill at Newlands Corner. Confused, I thought it was fixed speed but today have seen one has gone in at the bottom of the hill at Silent Pool. Seems as if PocketGPSWorld has them and now Waze but only the last couple of weeks. Are they live yet?

Interestingly they seem to be tracking speed going up the hill and not down it which is odd as you’d expect higher speed when coasting with gravity. But to be honest the speed in that area of Surrey is mostly people doing 50% of the speed limit anyway so you’d be hard pressed to break it.

Sponsored by Bell & Colvill?

It was bad enough when half the dual carriageway was restricted to one lane and 50 mph limit throughout.
No no, the A25 I mean on the way to/from Gomshall/Dorking. Nothing on the Lotus route at the moment, except the usual chaos and the odd camera van on the dual carriageway up to the lights.

Pretty rough isn’t it. Not surprising, I guess there’s lots of accidents when people pull out of the National Trust car park.

Drove past again this evening, looks like it’s unfinished, one more camera to go in at top and bottom, then will do speed up and down the hill. Not sure if it’ll be extended down towards where it meets the A246 but, towards Gomshall after Silent Pool it is still 60mph thankfully.

Yes, it seems they're all gradually getting nailed down. I've no idea if these roads have poor accident records or whether it's just the hand-wringers. Nonetheless I recall with a smile some interesting moments in an Esprit turbo back in the day and will treasure those memories all the more.

By the way, nearly a hundred years ago there was an interesting moment in history when Agatha Christie's car was found teetering over the edge of that very road by Newlands Corner. Her driving licence was left in the car but she had "disappeared". Turned up several days later at a hotel in Harrogate, quietly minding her own business despite a major national search.

I mean, that’s the argument they’ll use. I think there have been a few bike crashes in the Summer recently due to people pulling out of the carpark. It is a lovely bit road to throw a bike and interesting car along, but we just have to wait until after Silent Pool now to do it.

Interesting fact and a good read. I bet in this day and age they’d have her chased down with a helicopter biggrin.

Are you sure these are going to be average speed cameras?

There are new front and rear facing infrared ones that look similar, work at night, and can also be used for monitoring traffic so don't need to be put in accident hotpots.

No doubt they'll be placed on any road with an ounce of enjoyment potential in the near future. frown

No wonder there are an increasing number of bikers without number plates these days.
I do believe so, they are yellow units on black poles, the same as those A217 Reigate Hill if you’re familiar. I went through again today (lucky me!) and stuck to 40mph in case, but those ahead rushed off. They didn’t flash at those doing 50+mph and don’t appear to have flashes, so I don’t think they are Jenoptik fixed speed like A217 Woodhatch.

I’m trying to have a better look but it’s dark each way at the times I travel.

Either way, go easy on your next trip!
