Looking for an everyday runaround for using in london, want somethign with a bit of poke, and fun for winter driving on wet roads in the country too.

Quattro fits the bill.
Car will do 5k a year - winter miles only.
Won't be garaged

So what do I spend? Or is this a bad plan and I should go buy a ford probe to ruin instead?

Cheers!

Hiya,
read my remarks on "What Car" on this forum, bit about Audis.
If you want to buy a performance car for winter use, you're not going to beat a Quattro.
Don't know how much you want to spend but you can buy a cracker for 6 or 7 grand if you shop wisely.
If you want a 20 valve you might have to pay a bit more, it just depends on how nice you want it to be.
Try and get an original, untarted car, it's a much better investment.
Best of luck.

Given that Quattros are getting thin on the ground I think you should ruin a Ford Probe instead. They are a car to cherish, rather than abuse.

I used to have an 'MB' Quattro. FANTASTIC all weather cross country performance.A bit wasted in urban driving tho' IMHO.

Hmmm a Audi 90 quattro maybe looks lie the best bet then - remember them well very nice cars. Seems that full on 80's quattro whilst an amazing machine, would be wasted doing the kind of driving I'm thinking of.

Anyone know of one hanging about anywhere?

All Audi have an S2 for £4000 - with that you'd get more poke than a ur-Quattro and a lot more than a 90 20V. Virtually indestructible and quite discrete.

mmm interesting Quite like the S2, would be an ideal london stealth machine. Got a link?

I ought to be on a commission from this place

Edited to add that 140,000 shouldn't be problem on one of these - just run in! Probably best to get it checked over though, YMMV etc. The 100 S4 they have there is also worth a look I should think.

Less than a grand fitted I should think... but on a car that needs a new turbo you can usually bet the cylinder head needs replacing too, and they are NLA. To be honest a WR engined quattro needs it's engine rebuilding once it's done over 100,000 miles. All the rest of the car is bomb-proof however, assuming the electrics haven't been raped.

Having said that I don't know what the mileage is on this car and I dare not check lest I weaken.

Later Quattros (MB and RR engine codes) seem to have been fitted with engines with a practically unlimited life... I reckon mine has done about 175,000 miles now. Shame it was clocked at some point.

They're in Bristol, just off the ring-road. Genuinely good guys to do business with in my experience.

Has this one been solved yet? I ask because I was talking to the friend who bought mine, and it's for sale. In perfect nick - only 1,000 miles since I sold it. Owner is head of the best Audi franchise in Britain, so as you can imagine he's got the car in exceptional condition - at one time Audi wanted it for their museum.

He's selling it to pay for an XK120 he's just bought.
Mleage 70,000 approx, but LHD. All our family loved it - one of the best cars we've ever had.
