If you're looking for accommodation in Germany try www.hrs.com . I've used it for the past few years when travelling on business over there and the service is great. The rates are often very reasonable and you don't always need to give a credit card or deposit, free reservations as long as you arrive before 6pm (you can also call if you are going to be late and they'll usually still hold the room for you).

Great country, fantastic people, good food (helps if you're not a vegetarian) and best of all superb beers.

Shame we don't have a similar site for the UK, booking reasonable accommodation over here is hit and miss compared to using hrs. No doubt everyone would be pleased of your advice for 'ring visits.
