Indeed - That pressure of not wanting to be associated with it made it so that I was almost running between shots and then rushing them when I got there.

And despite that, it made bugger all difference to the pace of our group....because you're only as quick as the slowest player.

When I was really looking forward to everything about the round, to then effectively have it ruined, was incredibly frustrating and mentally tiring.......and 24 hours later, I'm still really annoyed about it.
Honestly I entirely get why you are annoyed - playing with that sort of chap would drive me up the wall. Slow play is one thing, but after the second Coke bottle had been opened on my back swing I would have been suggesting to him in no uncertain terms that if he did it again the bottle would have been inserted somewhere on his person - and it wouldn't be thin end first. People who can't be quiet when you are playing are one of my biggest pet peeves on the course - and I'm not generally easily distracted when playing a shot.

However as the dust settles I'd focus on the positives from the experience:

- You entered a big 36 hole competition. Half the battle in this game is putting yourself out there and having a go, so full respect to you on that one.
- You made the cut after the first 18 with what sounds like an excellent round of golf, so not only have you played good golf but done it under pressure and not been overawed - again full respect.
- If this guy is as notorious as it sounds then I doubt anyone would have been looking at you as being the problem. Slow players are typically well known in most clubs.
- you've got a name of member not to put yourself down in future comps with - or playing behind for that matter smile
- if you were dealing with that behaviour all day and it took you until the last 4 to blow up, that shows a certain resilience, so again full respect.

Unfortunately golf can attract it's fair share of dheads, and it does sound like you were paired with an extreme example.

So I definitely wouldn't let it put you off - far from it. Sounds like one of the most exasperating people you could possibly play with and I don't reckon you dealt with it too badly at all.

Hello,
I've tried all the free apps for scoring, GPS tracking etc.
Wife bought me a new se apple watch for Christmas - use it for work and gym.....and don't like paying for two of the same thing if you get my drift (tight yorkie here).

ANYWAY, AS I've Benn getting into more golf and wanting to get better (played for years with no yardage knowledge other than estimated sight)....so I bought Arccos sensors for my clubs and paired to iPhone and use shot selection from iWatch.

This pushed the cost boat out......and at first I was disappointed with how many shots arccos 'missed'......buthaving persevered for say 8 rounds now I absolutely love the setup.....not cheap though at £140/year.

A friend has the Tag watch, but at £2500.......I won't be buying that any time soon.

I do keep looking at Garmon as the GPS of another friend seems stronger than arccos.......but more expensive. I am looking at the new shotscope for next year, but the app doesn't look as precise or well configured as arccos.

For now I'm sticking with arccos and have got really into the post round analysis with a beer!
Fellow tight Yorskireman here. I have an Apple watch and use U-Swing, A fre app which tells you your yardages. You can upgrade (and pay) for other bits but I find the yardage more than adequate for my standard (20 handicap).
I got the Garmin s12 off Amazon for eighty something pounds--usually £150 ish.

Don't know what had happened I guess Amazon alogorithms went on strike for a short period.

Saw it at that price so quickly dived in.smilesmilesmile

Jordan Speith-esque 9 holes today!

Par, 8, Par, 8, Birdie, Par, Double, Bogey, Triple

The frustrating thing is, it could've easily gone,

Par, Bogey, Par, Par, Birdie, Par, Bogey, Par, Triple (I was dreadful on the 9th, I'll admit that)

On the second I was green side bunker in two, then I fatted one and bladed the second out over the green, then onto the green and a 3 putt!

On the 4th, my PP told me he saw where my ball came down, so we looked for it, couldn't find it, dropped for four, hit a tree, punched out, then hit an amazing pitch in and two putted. On the way up the 6th we found my original ball some 60 yards from where we were looking, and although it was on the wrong fairway I had a clear look in and the way I was hitting my irons I think I could've got close.

On the 7th, I hit a tee shot which somehow sat on the wall of a bone dry bunker, meaning a big hook out to the base of a tree. Then clipped the very top branch of another tree, dropped down for about 20 yards distance gained, into a bunker, great splash out, 2 putt

On the 8th I had a brutal lip out denying me a good up and down.

One of those days. My PP had a terrible time out though so while I felt his pain it was a comfort to me!

The strange thing is getting in, and checking my Shot Scope stats, only to be told that I only gained shots Vs a 20 handicap on approach play. I shouldn't be surprised because of my score but it is still a kick in the bks.

That sounds awful. How old was he?
Even in a friendly knock it's appalling behaviour, never mind a comp.
He was maybe early 60's. Has apparently been a member for 9 years and was a member of a different club before ours (although I've never seen him before) and he had regularly submitted a bunch of cards for handicap. He was playing off 23 for the comp.
If you have the other player on your side, other than just accepting it or telling him in no uncertain terms that he needs to get a shift on, you have two possible options.

Either. Leave him behind, just play your shots and walk off. He’s got a choice to either keep up or not.

Or, step aside and wave the group behind through, maybe then he’ll get the idea.
I like the idea of leaving him behind, wonder how that would pan out though?

They are a type! And found at the more " I've been a member for 35years and wear tweed age range"

Met one the other day ,walking across a hole with spaniel and no clubs, asked him if he was lost and said he had to stick to footpaths if not golfing as he was being a prise tt and dog stting in middle of fairway

We exchanged pleasantries and had a call from the club secretary the next morning....1.0 to me!

It’s sort of surprising Irons haven’t been 3D printed before now. The price will be from the hype, the limited nature of the run and the R&D, the 3D printing in itself isn’t that expensive.

Probably very good, although I doubt it’ll be revolutionary. I really find it hard to believe the construction can change the base physics behind hitting a small ball with a metal paddle on the end of a long stick hehe

I probably would have done that, after asking him to play faster perhaps. Life is too short! Sod any repercussions hehe

A friend of mine does get very tetchy when I try and get him to pick up the pace though, bless him.

Sounds like a right annoying experience that ruined not only your golf but your day.

I'd write to the committee as he obviously does it a lot and it's not on if you are paying to play.

If you don't know who members are it can be a Russian roulette in comps it really can, I had a guy do similar idiotic things and now I avoid them, even if randomly picking the same slot on a comp draw.

I would hazard a guess most top athletes are.

Well, if not most, then a significant minority. I’d guess they often have egos, selfishness and an enormous desire to get what they want.

I think it’ll be a real shame if it’s some bad behaviour on his side, it’ll definitely make me think less of him, not that he’d give a st.

I don’t realise Speith just needs the PGA to complete the Career slam. I don’t think he’s really on it this year, but it would be fun to see. His commentary after after each shot makes me chuckle.

You have to be selfish to make it at the top level. I doubt anyone is calling Scheffler selfish for playing at the PGA having just had a kid.

He's just had 2 weeks off and is now going back to work - isn't that what most Dad's do when they become a father?!

Haha not in the slightest - good to see them being used and about as clean as mine! They were the one set of Nike Blades I never got to experience other than the odd shots with me mate's set, seemed just as good as the other two though.

I like the two Drivers as well - what's the thinking behind that?
