79km on down hill dirt track in New Zealand (Swampy Summit , nr DUNEDIN) last year! The only time I,ve finished a ride covered in splatted bees and bugs!
Mind you, it took me about 6 months to work up to that speed.and I set up my camcorder up at the bottom of the track to record the madness!

Those are some impressive speeds guys. You wouldn't want to be coming off at those speeds OUCH.

Totally agree, try not to think of it and just go with the flow, I was more worried about the huge drops off to one side should I have misjudged anything

I've read that you can die from blood loss from coming off at 30...

You could die from blood loss coming off at 2mph if you hit the wrong part of the scenery though, there's so many variables involved you can't really assume you'll be OK if going less than X speed, but might die if you fall off over that speed.

Alright, from tarmac abrasions at 30. I've come off at lower speeds and I don't really want to repeat it. I haven't got anywhere local that's relatively safe to try bettering my currrent record - I don't think built up areas with 30 limits or short downhills approaching blind bends count. That reminds me - try to get your braking done before blind bends - having the back step out at around 35mph in a blind bend wearing a t-shirt and tracksuit trousers (but I was wearing a helmet) is slightly concerning.

On mtb with knobblies, have managed 74kmh (46mph) on tarmac - needed to use the brakes to avoid going into the car in front - big wide main road but the old duffer in front wouldn't go any faster.

Have recorded 60kmh on fire trails, and 45 kmh on rockier stuff - hurts to hold on any faster.

Have also dared myself to hit 60kmh on one short stretch of tarmac, before a 90 deg right across a ford with 10cm of water. Got the speed, but didn't think the brakes were going to pull me up in time, and had unclipped my feet ready to go straight on and into the river. Made the turn with my wheels right up to the left hand kerb of the bend.

Not ridden for ages, but long standing max was 38, down Leckhampton road in Cheltenham. Managed to snap the front brake cable halfway down, and ended up going flat out over 2 mini roundabouts and a busy T junction. Managed to stop it with the back brake a while later down the hill. Bodged the front gear cable into the brake for the rest of the way home, and it's stayed like that ever since. So if you see someone triyng to stop using their gear shift then give me a wave.

Goes and starts a "what new bike" thread

On my old road bike - 56mph on a steep downhill. On my current bike (single speed fixed gear) 41mph. Slower but a lot more scary, no freewheeling and I can't spin any faster

My imagination is waaaay too vivid in terms of the damage I could do to myself if something - me probably - goes t1ts up at high speed. More so when I read somewhere, Cycling Plus I think, that the medical profession has a calculation for the coefficient of friction for tissue loss over distance travelled across asphalt

Fastest so far is 59kph on seriously rockey track. Frightened the S**T out of my self. My arms almost gave way with the vibrations, the brakes wouldn't stop me (too much speed on loose rockey ground), I nearly clocked a tree on the outside of one curve and half way down I got worried that at this rate the carbon bar could snap (I've heard horror stories).

Nearly threw up at the bottom.
