Iran - Israel War
Discussion

I counted three explosions, plus the one that was on BBC earlier. It’ll all depend what they hit and the damage they did..If they cratered some fields I suspect this will all blow over quickly.
If they hit critical infrastructure - this is highly likely to escalate.
Edit: former CENTCOM provider on BBC now saying Natanyahu wants this to open into a hot war and Biden will have to calm him. Let’s hope that works better than it has with Hamas, where he seems to have been almost completely ignored.

You’re talking about who is right about what from what perspective? Seems somewhat irrelevant at this point: weapons have been fired. The consequences of that will play out. Who can claim the moral high ground is academic. Israel will doubtless have know there could be military consequences but seems they’ve assessed that they can sit behind their advanced defensive systems and strike at Iran using the Iranian’s weakness in defence to extract a disproportionate toll:
I'm talking about what I tend to think both sides would do because it's what they can get away with while still being in their interests to do so. Certainly it has nothing to do with being 'right' as that has never mattered in geopolitics. Given Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging fire on the lebanon/Israel border in a relatively well calibrated way, I'm not sure what's that different to the Iranian actions as reported so far (attempted strike at military targets in the golan heights I believe per NYT)......SlimJim16v said:

Do the Israelis not have enough aircraft? Why are we defending them, other than to make London a target for extremists? This is very dangerous.
why does the UK send a couple of fighters all that way, when Israel already has more than that ready?hidetheelephants said:

Yes Damascus is the same as London, excellent point.
Damascus is much better; it doesn't have a ULEZ. Israel crossed an important line, I’m afraid.

I've been very supportive of Israel recently but they did cross a line, never thought I'd be in a position to say Iran is within their rights to retaliate.
I beg to differ. It may be a risky move but Israel is basically at war with 4 of Iran’s proxies. They just called their bluff this time. It’s one step short of hitting Iran directly.Edited by fido on Sunday 14th April 01:20

Is Cyprus not further away than an Israeli air base?
Israel is at best on neutral terms with Jordan, the likelihood of Israeli airforce jets being allowed into Jordanian airspace to intercept Iranian drones is low to non existent. The Jordanians won't want to do this themselves to avoid annoying Iran, which then leaves the US and UK that are on friendly terms with Jordan and have aircraft nearby do it. Intercepting in Jordanian airspace avoids Israel escalating had the drones made it to Israel. It's all the just the messed up politics of the region.

Early reports suggesting US, UK, Israeli, Jordanian and Saudi air forces have all operated in Jordanian airspace tonight to shoot down incoming missiles and drones. It's all the just the messed up politics of the region.
