Amsterdam is easy, leave plane jump on train downstairs, hop off 15 minutes later and walk to dam square etc or onto a tram if needed.
Problem with Schipol is it takes longer to taxi to your gate and also queue for immigration than flying from London. Amsterdam is a great city nonetheless and Dutch public transport is brilliant. Compare Schipol with Rotterdam where you can do both of the above in less than 5 minutes. Well connected to Delft, The Hague & Amsterdam too.

Never done Eurostar and my son is a big train fan so absolutely need to do this soon....possibly for another time though.
If your son is into trains I’m guessing also cars and planes? If so Munich would be my suggestion out of the ones I listed.

We went last month, great train and tram network and Munich has the largest technology museum in the world which has everything from planes to farming equipment and satellites. Also at the central station is a huge model train shop. With some of the trams appearing to look very old.

We then went Munich to Austria on the Venice train then hoped off to a local service. We were then greeted by a train built in the war.

So, it has finally happened! Good to know. Thanks.

Still on the wrong side of Milan for me but it gives more options, being able to get to Centrale before the afternoon lull.

I do agree with that, I was there in March and it truly felt like one of Europes busiest and biggest airports. Next time I will get the Eurostar.

Another plus point for a German city like Nuremberg. Small regional airport with a metro station. Hotel to airport in about 15 minutes with hardly any crowds smile

Zurich is dead easy and great rail link direct to city centre. Any train to Zurich HB and you're right in the centre.

Vienna is similarly so. Easy, cheap, regular and convenient.

Oslo is relatively cheap to fly to, but less cheap to stay in, although there are budget hotels and air bnbs. Gardermoen is well connected by train to the centre.

With things like the Fjord, Frogner Park, Holmenkollen, the Resistance, Viking and Munch Museums etc, there is plenty for children.

Keep off the booze and think London prices for the food.

To add to the above, Stockholm (ARN) has the high speed Arlanda Express which is directly below the airport and takes you straight to Stockholm Centralstation in under 20mins.

Warsaw has a good train connection straight into town. 20 mins and costs about 90p each way. Polish public transport is superb and extremely cheap. The beer and food is still pretty cheap too.

Did Berlin last year and has an incredible public transport system, berlin brandenburg has a train station(ubahn/sbahn) and just get on the one that heads in the right direction and get off at the closest stop to your hotel, we stayed in friedrichschain and had 2 stations either side of the hotel and just walked from either one.ostbanhof and warschauer straße in our case.

Just got back from vienna and is the same transport system although they have CAT, the city airport train. 1 direct train to the city centre and back. In both cities the rome 2 rio website works wonders. In vienna we did get public transport to and from the main station but as berlin, its a doddle.

Did rome last year too and you can get a train from the main termini to fiumicino airport, iirc i used the same website for travel on the metro. Wewalked from the main termini to our hotel, onlyreally usedthe metro to go to the colosseum.

Did krakow the other month, gor a rather cheap uber between 4 of us to our hotel and walked everywhere... barring auschwitz, the coach took us.

Thats the extent of my city break knowledge smile

Birmingham International.

It has a monorail link to the train station then you are on the west coast mainline to Birmingham, glasgow, London. The train will cost more than the flight though, plus you have strikes.

Should have added Krakow above. Great city.

We got an Uber from the old town to the airport in Krakow last Saturday night, it cost £10. No point in buggering around with public transport for that price!

Lovely isnt it, the missus said it was one of her favourites, we said also about doing another city in poland smile and youre right, unbelievable isnt it, i cant remember the price but the stand outside of KRK wanted silly money for the journey in comparison.

BACK ON TOPIC.

OP likes the thought of germany, berlin is full of things to visit.

2 zoos, checkpoint charlie, alexanderplatz/tv tower, world clock, reichstag(book in advance), tiergarten,East side gallery, murdered jews memorial, topography of terror.

The transport is unbelievably easy, go on the rome to rio site and you cant go wrong, once youre more familiar with the system and stations you can just use it as a timetable smile and if you do get off at the wrong one/miss it it wont be the biggest PITA either.

Malaga. Out of the terminal straight onto the tube and into the centre or edge of the old town in 10-15 minutes. Brilliant food history architecture and shopping. Plus beaches for the kids.

That sounds brilliant though only looking at 3 nights so pushing it timewise. Definitely something I can think about when planning a longer holiday though.

That's pretty much what I want - short break, not too much hassle with the travel, kids can experience some planes/trains, visit an interesting city for a couple of days.
