What are your unpopular opinions? (Vol. 2)

When people say they "don't like jazz", I always think "what, all of it?". It's quite a broad church.
I said it earlier. I don't like jazz. But yes, you are correct and it is a bit more nuanced than that and the only/best example that I can think of is that I like Dave Brubeck, Take Five, but only so far in... once it gets into the solo improvisations it loses me and I switch off, both mentally and in reality. That, to me, is not music, it's just noise and gets progressively worse. But... I appreciate that some people see it as genius.
Similarly, I like Freebird, but tend to get a bit tired of the solo.
Another unpopular opinion, then. Instrumental solos tend to be for the player, not the listener and more often than not they descend into onanistic self absorption.

Indeed. I've got into jazz over the past few years and really enjoy quite a lot of it. A lot of the improv/experimental stuff sounds ridiculous to me though, and I can't see I'll ever like it. Then again, if you told me 20 years ago that I'd listen to jazz at all I wouldn't have believed you.

Here’s another UO. People who don’t have kids should not have to pay council tax. And council tax should go up the more kids you have. Why? Dunno. Just seems a bit unfair as a single self sufficient chap with a small footprint on the world should have to pay even 75% of what the huge tribe across the road have to pay.
Hmm, not sure on that one - you still enjoy the same services that they do.Here’s another UO. People who don’t have kids should not have to pay council tax. The problem with council tax is that it's really, really redistributive. Look at a pie chart for what your local authority spends money on, and see how much of it you use. I don't have a problem with that, but I do sometimes think "I don't care that you spend most of the money on things I don't use, but please empty the bins before they stink, don't mount the Spanish Inquisition at the dump recycling centre, and fix the fking potholes". I think their budgeting choices are somewhat constrained, though, by their statutory duties.

That would be an extremely unpopular opinion in France where you get big income tax benefits based on the number of children you have. Here’s another UO. Agreed. The stuff that councils do is pretty much directly correlated with number of people. So, the payment should be people based, not property based.
Indeed. This is getting dangerously close to a popular opinion, a house with
5 working adults pays the same CT as a similar sized house with
a single pensioner, how is that possibly fair ?

Yes. It was much fairer than the crap that we have now.
You can have it if you work out how to collect it without causing riots and the govt that brings it in to lose the next election.Any method to actually redress that slightly, by having people actually pay for the services they consume, creates riots and polling fears.
Hence why no government has thought strategically or long term for far, far too long.
