Every year i put a bit of weight on at xmas and then drop it again around this time of year. only about 1 stone. i am 6"2, quite well built, and go from 14.5 stone to 13.5 usually, no problems at all, 1 months strict diet. But this year in january i started working out 4 times a week, doing weights, pressups, chinups, dips etc, and dieting at the same time. So now 3 months in i am only 14.2 so have only "lost" 3lbs on the scales. yet i look as "slim" as i always do when i trim down to 13.5 stone. I guess my question is, is it possible in 3 months to have actually lost that stone in fat, and gained 11lbs in muscle? my arms are 1.5 inches bigger than when i started etc, and ih ave been eating loads of protein, eggs, tuna, protein shakes etc. 11lbs Just seems like alot?

ye ai heard muscle weighs more than fat. So realistically gaining 1.5 inches around my arms and my chest being slightly bigger could account for 11lbs? i guess i'm looking in the mirror, and because the scales are'nt showing that much of a loss i'm feeling disheartened!

Best thing you can do is take a picture of yourself, that way when you hit the wall you can look at the pic of you as a fattie and think feck I have gained loads.

figure about roughly 1.5 to 2 lbs of muscle per month. although you will eventually plateau: the intial period will be your best.

yea i did do that actually! arms etc are noticeably bigger, which i'm pleased about. Was just wondering if 11lbs muscle gain is normal for 3 months of working out hard 4 times a week? or am i kidding myself?

I've just gone through a similar cycle. My weight has dropped since taking regular excercise, but not by a great deal. I do however look MUCH fitter and stronger than when I started in August of last year. Like you I train 4 times a week; cycling, swimming and weights. The only fly in my ointment at the moment is the odd bout of binge drinking. If I can shake that off then I should see the rest of the fat drop away yes

yes same here, i do binge maybe once or twice a week sometimes! only on weekends though. I'm off to thailand tomorrow, and can;t decide wether to try and drop that last little bit of fat when i get back, or start trying to properly bulk up straight away?!

It's doable, but you'd have to have a fairly solid training/diet regime, especially if you are already quite athletic to start. I guess only you will know how often you 'cheat' and therefore how likely it is.

Also bear in mind you probably wont notice that much of a difference between 5% body fat (that is you could have 17% and it wouldn't look massively 'fatter' than 12% especially if you've been putting on muscle as well)

yea good point. i definately feel better in myself, and look better in t-shirts i didn;t feel great in before. So i guess that's my answer really! just annoyed that the weight doesn;t seem to be coming off on the scales like it usually does!

Well you say you are doing weights and dieting, it is very hard to put on muscle unless you are flooding your body with protein and that is changing your diet not "dieting"

even if you are experiencing begginers gains it is very unlikely to have gained 11lb muscle.. 3-4lb maybe?

For someone new to training, or coming back after a lay off, an 11 lb gain over 3 months is a peice of piss.

i normally don't care about weight, muscle weighs more than fat, so i just gauge myself on how many pressups/crunches/squats/cycling etc i do a week. if i can do more than the week before then i feel i have gained something.

since really getting the hump with myself and getting doing stuff, i have lost some flab around the gut, but gained lots of muscle in the arms/stomach/legs.

Gaining 11lb of muscle in 3 months is impossible without drugs, were do you get yours from. hehe

I wouldn't call 6'2" and 14.5 stone well built...
I have a similar problem too though, no matter how hard I work out I seem to lose very little weight, as I do alot of top end weights mostly and some crosstrainer for CV, which in reality does little more than build up my leg muscles and rarely get me out of breath...
Stick at it, weight is of less importance than tone and physical appearance of carrying less weight. If all these goons who live my BMI were right, most professional sportsmen would be overweight due to carrying muscle....
