Sounds like the trainers mate... I run about 3 times a week and what you are experiencing is what I had before I got myself some decent running trainers. Make sure you are landing either on your heel or toe (there are shoes for both) and not a flat-footed slam to the deck. Don't do any hills to start with either as going up them will take it out of you, and coming down them will make your knees worse. Take it easy and walk before you run hurhur

Cheers for that. All my running is along a tow path so couldn't be flatter. And the trainers are either Asics (which the bloke in the shop checked my stride etc when I bought them) and some Nike Air Pegesus things, which seem to fit well.

Hill sprints 20 miuntes 3/4 time a week, sprint approximately 50meters up a hill walk down and repeat for 20 minutes will work wonders.
Sounds interesting. Just missing a nearby hill smile

If you are serious about running for fitness, get a proper pair of running shoes from a proper running shop - not JJB or the like - they should at the very least have you running on a treadmill to determine your foot type (over pronator, supinator or neutral) and will recommend a shoe accordingly
Lots of good stuff in Parsnips post - rest of this thread, mostly bks. You're easily capable of running for 30 minutes almost every day - its a short distance (most likely < 4 miles) and you aren't going to damage anything with the correct footwear.....footwear is all important and you must get the correct shoe type for how you run - picking one off the shelf without correct advice is a quick way to shin splints and sore knees.

Usually after the second pint...and after every one thereafter...

I do about 30 miles per week on average - some fella mentioned gait analysis earlier on in the topic and I would agree with that.

Go to somewhere like Profeet, best £80/£100 you'll ever spend and make sure you stretch and warm up properly as well.

The stretch is more important afterwards - stretching beforehand is a bit of a myth and more people injure themselves overstretching cold muscles than they do if they just get out and run - so long as you build up the pace you won't have a problem.

I run a couple of times a week. Probably only 8-9 miles total. I'll probably step it up a bit as I get closer to a couple of summer/autumn 10ks.

You'll be amazed how fit you can become on this distance providing you vary the pace, do some hills, intervals etc.

I used to do more but I've discovered the hard way that boundless enthusiasm and lots of miles can get you into trouble. The resting bit is as important as the running bit.

As said before, stretch, buy decent trainers and don't try to do too much too soon.

Take a break from running from time to time too. -A week or two off. You won't lose much fitness, but lots of little niggles will clear up and you'll feel fresh again.

Just started running half an hour a day a couple of weeks back, but really beginning to feel it on my shins and ankles. Running down a tow path so it pretty hard surface, which isn't really doing me any favours.

Any tips? Should I be running every other day instead? And should I be mixing it up with little sprints then jogs?

Cheers.
Hi mate, i used to suffer really bad with shin splints, so bad you couldn't touch the area.
Over time it just seemed to disappear, that said since i have had the asics it has improved.
Also try and do a mixture of treadmill and street running.
I mix cardio exercise with weights also to give the knees a little rest. Good luck
