Good man.

Anybody else willing to take up the challenge?

It could change your life...biggrin
I am now on day two. I keep finding my fingers in my mouth but so far have caught myself before any further damage was done.
Excellent. That's a good sign that you are serious. Nobody said it is going to be easy. I'm on week two and have absolutely no desire to bite them after doing so all my life.

I really can't understand it, but I'm actually feeling quite smug and pleased with myself.

As a lifelong nail biter, I found it surprisingly easy to stop biting my nails when I wanted my hands to look better for our wedding day. That lasted about a month!

I now chomp away again like a nutter on my nails and they look terrible. Wedding was 20 years ago. I really should make a conscious effort not to bite them, and I will try to do so now!

I've been biting my entire life. It's got to the point that, if I let my nails grow even a little bit, I find I can't type because my nails hit the keys rather than the flesh of my fingers. As I have to type huge amounts for my job, I guess I'll just keep biting them.

Having said that, I've got no great drive to stop. Don't see it as a problem that needs fixing...
Same! I mainly bite my nails through work related stress. I’ll find myself biting in high pressure situations or when working on a difficult problem. I also prefer the feeling of my fingertips on my keyboard, rather than nails against keys.

Strangely though, if I go on holiday or have some time off work, I never bite my nails! Simply, my cure for biting my nails is retirement. Just another 35 years to go; hopefully less!

Do you type like this? My fingers are fairly horizontal when I type.

Not exactly like that, as I can touch type, but yeah ... I type with my fingers bent, whereby the tips are near vertical. I can type fast too; I work in IT! If I’ve come back from a holiday, I can feel my nails catching on the keys ...

As a lifelong biter, I’ve managed to half give up, they currently look like this, if they get longer I bite them down to shorter length but nowhere near as short as I used to.

Not sure why I seem to have really long fingers there :-/

Anyway, the big issue I have is I want them to look better than they do now. Obviously they grow longer but they don’t seem to grow like other people’s anymore, they’re always detached from the finger underneath and they don’t go as far back towards the knuckle as others either.

When I lift them up, you can see how much nail is under the skin...

How do I fix that? I’m very self conscious about them and just want them to look normal now I’ve got on top of the habit.

Just out of interest, how many of you nail biters are very rarely ill? I don’t seem to get sick and I’m convinced it’s to do with biting my nails for as long as I can remember, anyone else?

This came up earlier and i think we agreed that the exposure you get from germs and dirt by constantly having your fingers in your mouth gives you a very healthy immune system!

I’ve always bitten mine except on holiday. It’s worst when I’m watching a film or tv alone. I too am going to try and give up now, it’s just such a daft habit.

I find it's totally sub-conscious. I just don't notice I'm biting them until somebody either mentions it or it hurts as I've bitten too much.

Keen to stop now though as my daughter is at that age where she's beginning to copy everything we do.

I am now on day 3 and have come very close quite a few times but just about managed to not actually do any chewing.

It's not easy!

Found myself with my fingers in my mouth last night, managed to stop myself before I "chowed down"!! Haven't felt the need to have my fingers near my mouth so far today!!

Well done .

I am tempted to get into the routine of taking a photo every day, not because i think there will be progress but just because it is a routine and i will feel i am then working towards something that will be ruined if i start chewing!

I was always a nail biter. I was a very anxious and depressive young adult. When I reached my late 20s I started working on my mental and overall health. Stopping biting my nails without consciously trying was a welcome side effect. Other welcome side effects included completely curing the irritable bowel syndrome and mild skin condition which had dogged me since my teens.

I always hated the fact that I bit my nails due to the hygiene aspect.

I was a serial nail biter, to the point they'd bleed. I just stopped one day as I was fed up of pain from water on my fingers.

Now, I have very strong thick nails that clippers struggle to go through! My cuticles, or what ever the skin that edges the nail, are still a mess, some 7 or so years later. I've tried special oils, creams etc, they just won't sort themselves out.
Took a shot. I cut my nails very close to the limit, as anything longer annoys me, I always flick the nail on stuff and break them. The image shows my crappy cuticles.

It's a disgusting habit, akin to picking your nose (and eating it) or continuously cracking your knuckles. Whatever social situation I find myself in, if I see someone's obviously bitten nails, I take them somewhat less seriously than I would have done otherwise.

Sorry to those of you who do, but have you thought how childish you appear during, or indeed, after the act?
Get off your high-horse.
