Biting your nails

I was a serial nail biter, to the point they'd bleed. I just stopped one day as I was fed up of pain from water on my fingers.
Now, I have very strong thick nails that clippers struggle to go through! My cuticles, or what ever the skin that edges the nail, are still a mess, some 7 or so years later. I've tried special oils, creams etc, they just won't sort themselves out.
Took a shot. I cut my nails very close to the limit, as anything longer annoys me, I always flick the nail on stuff and break them. The image shows my crappy cuticles. I used to bite them when I was a kid, up until my 20's I reckon, they've never really 'grown out' since, I do seem to pick at them quite a bit and hate having dirt under them, so always cleaning them and scraping any dirt out from under them, which prevents the nail bed getting any bigger.
same, done it all my life
And now I think I do it as a thinking aid. If i'm sat at my desk and I am trying to solve something, i'll either be twiddling my hair or running my nails through my mouth.
When I was younger my mum tried to get me to stop by painting on that acrid tasting anti-nail biting stuff. But in the end, I just bore the taste and eventually got used to it. So she gave up.

Firstly, thank you OP for starting this thread!
Terrible nail biter here, have done for 20+ years. I hate it, always conscious about my hands and I often work events where I interact with the public, find myself using a pen or pointing with my knuckle because I hate my fingers.
I stopped about 6 months ago for a few months and they started looking much better, not sure what caused it but relapsed and now they look like this:
I can't even look at them tbh.
I'll make an effort to stop again from today and see how I get on…

Been biting my nails all my life but suddenly stopped 2/3 weeks ago, the funny thing is I didn't make any conscious effort to do so, just don't feel the urge to do so. Really strange.
Cool story bro' and all that.
Anybody else done the same, maybe with smoking?
Did you start working at a sewage farm Cool story bro' and all that.

I am going to make this happen. Currently my nails are a mess, I didn't do a very good job of not biting over the weekend.
This may draw a few comments but I am seriously considering going to get a set of acrylic or gel nails.
You know when you see someone that is obviously wearing a wig? Make sure its not the same for your hands This may draw a few comments but I am seriously considering going to get a set of acrylic or gel nails.
Been a nail biter for as long as I can remember - I'm 47 now. Have tried all sorts to stop (actually that's a bit of a lie)
Recently I've been more into biting the skin around my nails, which is immensely satisfying, except when they bleed of course.
On a side note, I got served by a gentleman in a shop today, who had very long fingernails. Revolting!
