Jeez talk about a little defensive laugh

You accuse someone of being a Utd fanboy yet one could easily say you're a Messi fanboy based upon that little outburst.

I wouldn't make a judgement on Messi after 1 CL game with another club. I'm sure he'll come good.
I agree with all this, especially the judgement after 1 game, but he will, quite rightly, be judged against Ronaldo in his first season away from the Barcelona side built around him.

He was about 2in from scoring a 30yd worldie.

Still a big fail for PSG when you've got Mbappe, Naymar and Messi up front.

Messi signed for PSG in early August. They’ve played 5 games since, he started in one and came on as a sub in the other. No goals yet.

Ronaldo signed for United on the 27th August. They’ve played twice since. He started both games. Scored 3 goals.

Of course Messi will score.

But for me the above speaks volumes.

Ronaldo is absolutely chomping at the bit to pkay.

Messi? He isn’t.

Hunger, drive, desire. Doesn’t matter who’s naturally gifted. One man wants it and us prepared to put his cock on the block.

One man doesn’t and isn’t.

However, in fairness to Messi, he's been living in Barcelona since he was 13 years old, and has had to uproot and move to Paris, which he clearly want to be doing. I wouldn't expect him to gel with his new surroundings in just a month. If he still looks a little off the pace or not got his shooting boots on by xmas, then you might be right.

Ronaldo, has gone back to familiar territory and surroundings, and isn't a stranger to moving clubs either, so not surprised he came out the blocks firing on all cylinders.

True, he will get opportunities and he will score.
As always takes time to get in a new team/formation.
Being in the best team by far in a weak league should allow that.

My negative comments about him are more that I don't feel he's ever risked being out of his comfort zone.

Worth mentioning Ronaldo has joined Man U where he is already considered a god. The whole team will be set up for him to score.

Messi has joined a team with a lot of big names none of them are going to want to play second fiddle. Neymar and Mbappe are going to want their own glory ahead of him. It wouldn’t shock me if an element of wanting to prove they are better came into it.

Messi will be sharing his opportunities.

Unfortunately for Messi PSG are measured by one thing CL success league is considered the absolute minimum for them not a success like winning PL for Man U.

The footballers regarded as GOATs do not get the luxury of settling in excuses.

Have to admit that Messi’s tarred his legacy a little with me, at least.

Always been in camp Messi when it came to Ronaldo vs Messi.

Until he took the easy way out - rather then go on to prove he can adapt by playing in the hardest league in the world, he took the money and joined a pub league where weekends should be a stroll and the only time he will need to up his game is in the CL. The whole PSG dressing room is full of the same mentality.

Ronaldo, on the other hand , is showing he is ageless and able compete at the very highest physical level.

I agree.

If you're the GOAT you wouldn't need people making excuses for you.

After reading this, I'm astonished Messi actually wanted to stay at Barca (or even thought he could).......!

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58643421

Does make you wonder how much interest he actually bothered to take in what was going on at the club he claimed he loved so much?

I'm not sure Messi knew the implications. The short term problem Barca has are the new La Liga rules. Or maybe Barca already reached an agreement with Messi last season to let him go at the end of the season.

I see a correlation with United in the early years of last decade. Many people inside and outside the club don't want, or are unable, to see reality.

In Barca's case; years of mismanagement in de Bartolomeu years. A great dependancy on the ageing top players from the golden era. Barca buying the wrong players and overpaying both in wages and transfer fees. Corona combined with the new LaLiga rules were the final push. Result; massive write-offs, transfer fee money evaporates without any performance in return. Barca is thrown back many years.

In Uniteds case; a similar dependency on the old guard, not renewing an ageing squad combined with the upcomming Chelsea's and City's. Meanwhile atracting mediocre players like Lingard, Phil Jones, Smalling, Evans, Felliani, etc.

In both cases the outcome is similar, unrealistic expectations being one of them. Meanwhile management is trying to buy time. Although Uniteds financial situation has always been fairly healthy.

Koeman is not to be envied, well apart from the severance payment he will receive at some point in the coming months of course.

I wonder what this will mean, long term, to Barcelona. I suspect they'll still be near the top of La Liga and still be in every Champions League, just not contending to win it. Or something will happen, they'll manage to find a way and be back near the top of Europe again.

RM would probably have been in a similar situation without the sale of Ronaldo a few years ago and some ‘clever’ accountancy from Perez… reduce debt by €200m at the same time as losing €300m of revenue… magic laugh

Like many other teams, they'll have to get used to a lean spell again in winning things.

The trouble is they've forgotten those days and assumed they were gone forever.

From when they lost in the European Cup final to Benfica in 1961, Barca didn't get to another European Cup final until 1986, when they lost again, to Steaua Bucharest, and they had to wait until 1992 to actually win it for the first time.

The big Italian clubs went through this, English clubs did to an extent, so too some French clubs and also the former Iron Curtain Slavic clubs Some rebounded, some are on the way back and others are nowhere to be seen (Marseille, Monaco, Red Star). Success is cyclical, some cycles are a couple of years, others decades and some might be centuries.

Only time will tell what happens.

True, although for some reason I never expected it to happen to Barcelona, and in quite a way as this!

It is shocking how quickly Barca have fallen though.

Hang on, am I missing something.

Barcelona have played 4 league games and one CL game.

A bit early to be writing them off and saying how far they’ve fallen IMO.
