Sounds like there was something wrong with that Legacy to me.

Whats the mpg on one of those flat-six Leggys?

Maybe not the most exciting of questions, but I've had a hankering for one for a while and might just tempt myself in a couple of months time.
They're not brilliant - I tended to be looking at the low to mid twenties on average - but equally not embarrassingly bad considering the level of performance smile

Is that on 95RON or superunleaded?

And yeah (not that it matters) but that is pretty poor mpg compared to what other vehicles can achieve. IMO smile

I expect they like the good stuff, though its not as vital for NA engines as it is for turbos. Best I've heard from an H6 Legacy is 38mpg on a run from a family friend.

Nowt wrong with it. They had them rolling roaded to prove it. In the last 1000rpm the Legacy is quicker, but the WRX had a much bigger area under torque ( and no valley of death ) in the real world it was quicker, and the shorter gears and less weight count for a lot. Its hard to believe unless you have seen the two cars side by side and the Legacy constantly going backwards, and I have confess I thought the legacy would be quicker myself.

That was mainly 95 RON with an occasional tankful of Shell Optimax/V-Power as a treat! No it's not great - but then the Impreza was getting anything between 7-15mpg on exclusively 97-98 RON + Octane Booster towards the end so I'm not complaining!

Drove an old GTB Legacy from Southampton to Rimini and back via Stelvio, Furka, Grimsel, Basel, Lake Como, Cortina, Marrenello, Imola, Monza, Nurburgring, Spa and everything in between.

That car was responsible for some of the most enjoyable moments I've spent in a car so I might be a little biased. I appreciate the old GTB is a totally different ride

I'll echo a few other peoples comments. Twin turbos appear to be problematic. All Subarus are unbelievably uneconomincal. MPG figures are awful for the power returned. Saw 12mpg on ours and best 19-21mpg of a long run. Legacy parts are not easy to find - old or new cars. For example we required a full exhaust system for the Leggy. Near on impossible to get. We got an rally spec Impreza system and modded to fit in the end. That 3" rally pipe through the tunnels outside Lecco will live with me for ever!!!

In the end though the two cars are different beasts. Think of the Impreza as Keith Flint, the Legacy Johnny Rotten. Both slightly mental but one more so!

It just sounds very different to my experience - my Legacy is on boost from 1600rpm (according to factory figures over 80% of peak torque on tap from 2000-6500), but the real power (ie turbos boosting in parallel) is from 4000-7500 (much more than 1k rpm!). Peak power at 6500 but it doesn't tail off until well after 7k. VOD is also a non-issue with mine, on full throttle you have to be actively looking for it to notice anything.

Heres a video from inside an RSK chasing a lightly modified STi-RA on a trackday - as you can see theres nothing really in it on the straights, but the RA is carrying more through the corners and getting better exit speed.

My 3.0Rn Leggy returns an average of 23mpg for hard motorway work. I mean *hard* too.

Around town, where it gets a far easier time, it returns around 18mpg.

It's an auto though, and mine seems consistently slightly worse efficiency than others I've encountered. Could be the right foot syndrome though.

Surely the best bet then is WRX/STi running gear in a Legacy?

I used to have a manual Legacy Spec B saloon. Tops on a long run was 29mpg, average usage around 23mpg, no town driving in that though. A superb car in every way with all the toys, an effortless long-distance car yet fun on B roads. I only got rid as I was tempted into an Impreza RB320, though I drive a Forester turbo for mundane every day stuff.

Thats not that bad, I know someone who used to have a VW Bora V6 4Motion and it managed an average of 25mpg and its a much smaller car with an extra gear.

My wife used to hate it because it was so inefficient relative to her car (C-class) but we recently drove it to Central France for a week, with our two young children. It never missed a beat. On the way back we achieved 1.3 leptons, as we chased the ferry departure in Calais, for 2 hours solid - never dipping below that on beautifully empty motorways. She even lent over to see the speedo and commented that it felt like we were only going 0.7L.

It swallowed up all of our luggage to the extent that I could still see through the rear window, and with the two kids in their child-seats and the twin-screens keeping them entertained (with my favourite MADAGASCAR) it just ate the miles.

Back home, I just love it on anything from A-roads to motorways. It's no B-road warrior I'll admit but I'm building another Caterham for those roads. smile

I realy would love a custom-build Landy but I just couldn't find the drive-space for 3 cars plus Mrs Mars', and I'm NOT getting rid of the Leggy... unless I replace it with another. But then, which one? I already have the built-in SatNav and leather/electric moveable/heated seats. I suppose a Spec-B is next but it's only a marginal upgrade from what I have.
