Cleaning a diesel tank and injectors-alternatives ?

Our 2004 renault grand scenic was misbehaving, so i changed the air and fuel oil filter, it runs better but not all of the time
The fuel filter had a lot of rubbish in it, i would like to help whatever is in the fuel tank-ie water and stuff into the fuel filter then do a big run and change the filter shortly after.
am i right in thinking that either meths or isopropyl alcohol will absorb any water in the system and that most diesel injector cleaners are paraffin?

When I ran a veg oil burning diesel, every now and then i used to run through some atf(automatic transmission fluid) normally the mineral stuff, so i chucked a liter in today and tried a bit of an italian tune and its running much better, more power every were and noticeably quieter on tick-over,

Can you be a bit more precise about that? I've been running da veggie just lately.even the mrs noticed

I used to run a rover 400 on a two tank system, even warming the veg before use you can get an ash/carbon build up around the injectors, the idea of using atf mineral not synthetic is that it has a very good detergent package, i used to run the feed and return to the same bottle of atf and do a Italian tune
on the renault I have just put in 1 liter of atf into the tank,with about 15-20 liters already i it and within 5 or so miles the engine felt smoother and felt a lot better, the other thing you can do is when changing a diesel fuel filter fill it with atf, lots of smoke on start.

Thanks for the info! I got a bit carried away the other day and brimmed the tank with 100% veggie as It was hot and I had a long motorway run to do so knew I could get rid of most of it. Poor old Gruntvan didn't want to start the next day, I had to crank it for about 5 mins before it fired up and took me to the petrol station where I brimmed it with diesel and it's been ok since.
You could try a product called Fuel Set. It's supposed to disperse water and the fungus that lives in fuel tanks.

It's aimed at boat owners really, but I've added it to the last 5 or so tanks, as my filters are always black when they get changed. Time will tell if it does anything useful though.
