Always were quick, not to the same extent these days, running at anything above 60 on the flat now you stand out like a sore thumb, but a limiter set to 58/59 you'd be very unlucky to get picked up.
Back in the 70s through to early 90s most Brit (more so than standard euro stuff which tended to be geared for 90kph) trucks would run easily at 70mph or so given decent speccing ie Cummins/Rolls Fuller Rockwell drivetrain, the odd few could get up into the 90's if you really pushed them, some very interesting tacho discs resulted from night trunking if you had a flyer, trace would go to the edge of the chart and draw a perfect smooth compass line around until you dropped back below 75 mph or so.
My father used to own a Ford Transcontinental in the late 70’s early 80’s-what a flying machine that was !!
It would easily do 80mph plus when fully loaded.always wish I’d been old enough to drive it!!

That's a good point.
Recently for me
Audi S1 indicated 70mph was 66mph
Yaris GR consistently 2mph out.
BMW 760 is about 3mph out.

And my old Lotus Carlton reads 80mph when the GPS says 72
My MG4 is 1mph out at 80. I'd assumed more like 3-4 and therefore we'll under prosecution limit.

I'm glad I actually checked.

The number of fast HGVs in the UK must be pretty small - I do quite a lot of miles in a Hilux towing a trailer and usually set the cruise on dual carriageways and motorways at GPS 60 - can't really remember a truck ever overtaking me.
Only ever seen one, on Irish plates that was doing 70-75 heading south on the A1.

Takes a minute to believe your eyes because you're so attuned to seeing lorries at 56.

I wonder if it uses GPS? Even if it reads from the propshaft it would be possible to do ongoing GPS calibration. Would be interesting to know if it's still as accurate when the tyres are nearly worn out compared to new. Please report back when you buy a new set smile

Okay, but why? Why the apparent lawlessness from a great proportion of Irish trucks with seemingly little detection or consequences? Seems to be viewed by most as just a humourous little thing, whereas we are led to believe that DVSA would come down on any lorry like a ton of bricks if that was picked up.
