1.7 tonnes, utterly shambolic for a ‘small’ 2 door coupe with sporting pretensions. All that nonsense of how well they have controlled the mass, just think how really good it could be if BMW controlled the mass during design and construction….
And of course you know better than they do how to do that at this price point for a 2023 car.

Being fixated by mass as a single measure of how good a car means you are really going to lose it when you learn how all the forthcoming EV performance cars magically manage their extra mass through low C of G, low polar moment of inertia and regenerative braking.

Yes, I know, Colin Chapman, grave, spinning, etc.

Astonishingly ugly car this. Really curious how many I'll see around vs the ubiquitous previous model.

In a way I'm glad as I'm not at all tempted to sell my OG M2 and order one of these. In another way, it's such a shame that the "last" non-electric assisted M car looks so rubbish. I've heard all the excuses about BMW designing for the Chinese market and not us enthusiasts and so on but I think that's insulting to the Chinese market. The design language is an appaling mess, it started with the current 4 and it's infiltrated all the range, bit by bit. It's as if there isn't anyone strong enough to say STOP, and the models get all the way to production looking nothing like as good as they could.

The poster above described the M2 as a Lego car is stop on, but a but of an insult to Lego who are limited to bricks and angles.

I also have a 5 series f11 daily and I know there is a new 5 coming soon. I suspect it will follow the same disasterous pathway and I will end up away from BMW for a while. We will see.

I work in design, at the cutting edge of using modern technology to make immersive art. And the current range insults me in the same way as 1970s architecture insults Victorian architecture.
Well I like the colour and I admire the strong design language. I think you’re sort of on the right track here. It’s clearly referencing 1970s influences with the hue, angularity and massing. The 70s are of course on trend now for hipsters. It’s not a “70s style car” but a “70s style thing” and none the worse for it. The lack of real instruments is regrettable but that’s how it is nowadays apart from luxury brands.

I had a deposit in, but pulled it and went for a 992T on that basis. Its close to being decent looking until you see the rear.

It's odd looking; don't know if I like it or not but it's certainly not cataclysmically ugly like the XM.

Other than the looks, the car sounds like a good 'un with decent ride and handling.

Visually that’s the automotive equivalent of the now-demolished Tricorn Centre in Portsmouth.

If you can get past the looks then "it delivered utter brilliance" is good to know!

Not a Bimmer fan in any sense, but I think this will be fondly remembered. The looks are more distinctive than off-putting like the pig snout Bimmers out there right now.
The seats are especially sharp. The interior nice.
What's a 'Bimmer'?

Oooh look, some old men on the internet don't like the design and think it should be a carbon copy of an E46. Yawn.

Take my money.

Also I've driven US89 over into Prescott and it's lovely. Northern Arizona has some great roads and it's very different from the stereotype images of the south of the state. The road up the valley past Sedona and on to Flagstaff is bonkers, although there's far too much traffic to have fun.

Proper unlucky to get the grey sky, that must happen about 5 times a year...
Haha! Some people on the forum have a different opinion on the design than yours, so they must instantly be 'old men': you drive an XC90 FFS, you're an actual OAP!!!! bigmouthbigmouthbigmouthbigmouth

Looks that only Stevie Wonder could love. Besides which, these types of cars are already obsolete. EV's are where our lords and masters have decided we must be going, and whether by direct legislation, or by suppliers indirectly removing supporting goods and services, the end result will be the same; a decline in the support of these products.

You may as well go out and buy a VHS (never mind betamax...) when everyone else is streaming. Good luck finding a blockbuster to rent you a video though. This is what it will look like in the not too distant future for these types of cars.
Obsolete? Nonsense. I think potential owners need not worry BMW are gonna pull its warranty cover. Millions of ICE cars are gonna be supported up to and way beyond 2035.

Cant get past the max power fibre glass stick on body-kit look, but I bet in black its better in the flesh.

Too heavy and too ugly (although looks are relative and this is a beauty compared to BMW's other recently launched products).

Avoid and buy the previous version, which is lighter and better looking.

£70k with a couple of options, almost 1750KG in auto form, average manual gearbox and looks like a Lego model.

No thanks, I'll have one of these instead.

There is so much that is right here - straight six, rear drive, manual box, however for me (whether its dictated by regulation or accountants desire to use one platform fits all) its weight (for a 'compact' 2 door coupe) is ridiculous, its looks, whilst probably the best of recent BMWs, is still challenging (platform related I assume) and the price, whilst 'reasonable' compared to an M4 CSL is quite something for a 2 series BMW.

Agree on the car - I'm seriously considering one - and DEFINITELY agree on that road. Took a Buell XB12 up and down that road (over and over again!) and it was glorious. Worth getting up at 5am to avoid the traffic. Happy memories.

I know it's a cliche to talk about newer BMWs being fugly, and I know car companies need to avoid being bland/boring by taking bold styling decisions, but this must be approaching the point where the depreciation will be higher because people will choose the better looking older version.
